I was surprised by how many businesses in my area were closed yesterday. A lot of places were shut down here in Biloxi, but it still wasn't as quiet as some towns around here.
When I was at the pharmacy yesterday, the cashier told me that she went across the bridge to Ocean Springs to buy doughnuts for everyone that morning that both of the doughnut shops were shut down, along with pretty much everything else except for essential businesses like gas stations and grocery stores and such. It was like Thanksgiving or Christmas!
I expected MLK day to be celebrated like President's Day, with government buildings and banks closed, but everything else carrying on as usual. I guess MLK Day is becoming like the 4th of July around here.
You know, I would expect things to be like that in cities with large black populations, like New Orleans or Detroit, but this area of Mississippi really doesn't have that many black people. I know that MLK Jr. was a hero for everyone and not just black people, but it's interesting that so many white people in the Deep South seem to be recognize that, too. Believe me, it wasn't like that when I was a kid. Attitudes among Southern whites about MLK Jr. seem to have made a 180 degree turn.

(16,844 posts)I have a lot of respect for the man, though. I believe he was the father of all the modern civil rights movements in this country, including civil rights for GLBT people. He had quite an impact on the rest of the world too, as you have shown. I also believed he knew he was going to have to give his life for the cause. I suppose if anyone in in American history deserves a gesture of respect, even if it's just closing your business for a day, it's Martin Luther King Jr.

(14,061 posts)...I work for a state office and it was about the only such office open. Traffic may have been a little lighter but that's about it. There was some controversy here because some school districts decided to have school, since a lot of time has been lost this winter due to bad weather.

(16,844 posts)that kids need to have all the time they need for learning. Our winters are mild, so we don't have to worry about snow days. We have to worry about time missed for tropical storms and hurricanes at the beginning of the school year. But we can relax during the winter. Hope y'all are able to stay warm and keep things running up there, wherever you are.

(14,061 posts)Snowing, the bottom is falling out temperature wise, and windy to beat the band. Schools are on a 2-hour delay.
This has been one of the hardest winters in my recent memory. Seems we're getting measurable snow just about every other day. To make matters worse, snow removal sucks, so you feel you're taking your life in your hands when you go out.
Spring can't come SOON enough.

(16,844 posts)God, I would hate shoveling snow all the time! We love snow down here because it's so rare, but it melts pretty quickly after it comes, so we don't have to deal with the problems associated with large amounts of snow. I really feel for you. That front you're experiencing is coming through here today also, and we're getting down to the 20's tonight, which is bone-chilling for us.
My friend in Cleveland usually comes down every year for Mardi Gras. It's usually mild at that time, and it's like a vacation for him. Sometimes it's rainy or a little chilly, but nothing like Cleveland whether. See if you can take a break and fly down for a weekend or something. I'm sure you'd enjoy it.

(16,844 posts)I guess if I were you, I'd have gone to the emergency room and gotten a script for some pain meds if you didn't have any already. That's about all you could do, I guess. I hope you're better soon.

(17,865 posts)He said meet him at the office at 8:00 this morning, which is less than 2 hours away.
It's not as sore this morning but it's still bad. I'm hoping he will lance it and drain it to relieve the pressure.
The timing was really unfortunate and why it got so bad. It started Friday night and I was out of town over the weekend. Called first thing yesterday morning but oops - office was closed for MLK Day. By yesterday afternoon it was unbearable so I requested an emergency call and he fixed me up.

(16,844 posts)People still die from them when they aren't treated. My great-grandmother told me a story about someone in our family who died of an abscessed tooth a long time ago. I'm glad you're getting the care you need.

(5,141 posts)I had to pick up a few things at my local Trader Joes, which is in a shopping center with Best Buy and Marshalls. There was virtually NO parking and I could see the crowds walking into BB and inside Marshall's. When I walked into TJs I nearly plotzed--the check out queues went all the way to the back of the store. MLK Day and an impending snow storm do not a peaceful holiday make!

(16,844 posts)Maybe our businesses thought they wouldn't be busy yesterday? It was kind of strange, but I guess they did it out of respect. It's the only answer that makes sense to me.

(12,482 posts)Good news is only one of the five rural school districts stayed open. That's right we have a school districtl ( it is the white flight from the relatively bigger one district) where it was a regular old school day. This is not the most progressive area.
LuvNewcastle
(16,844 posts)any federal or state holiday. For one district to stay open while the others closed seems like they were thumbing their nose at the holiday. That's the way I interpret it. Sad,

(288 posts)And do they hang out signs in your area letting you know which is which?
How do you tell?
arely staircase
(12,482 posts)And I know which are which because this is a small town where I have lived for many years. Also the north part of town is the predominantly AA part and most of the major businesses were closed. So no signs necessary even for someone who didn't know most of the business owners.

(37,573 posts)Pretty much the whole downtown, and it was busy too. I happened to have to go to work - just to finish up something I forgot Sunday night.
But speaking of the 4th of July, I happened to drive home on 4 July 2009 from Wisconsin to Kansas. It was not until I got to Hannibal, Missouri that it hit me - that everything was open.
Used to be on a holiday you'd have to hunt a little bit to even find an open gas station. More and more it seems like ALL holidays are being ignored - by almost everybody.
