(22,380 posts)Today: I live in the center of NC / in the city with supposedly the third highest number of hungry children in the US
My personal history: I grew up in post war Germany / oldest of 7 kids / we were very hungry
The cartoon: Our supposedly rich country is on the bottom rungs of what we do for our children, at least after they are born
The joke: I said it's not funny, and I add that it is sad. The 'toon doesn't depict the hungry African children that really we supposedly had to remember in this country in that silly directive - because it would then become a target for being called racist.
A story: A young woman told me recently that she always had to clear her plate, with just that admonition hanging over her head. She put duct taped baggies under the table into which she funneled the food from her plate so she could leave the table.
NOW THAT is funny.

(111,255 posts)are now well fed and children in the US are the ones who are hungry.
The cause of poverty is the accumulation of wealth into too few hands.
Poverty is a WMD.

(18,402 posts)No one ever said, "Eat your food. There are starving children in Japan."
I believe the expression was always "Eat your food, there are starving kids in Africa." That might have been fairly racist, when one looks back on it. But there were actually series of famine in Africa (remember Biafra?) that made it make a certain amount of sense back then. We saw pictures of truly emaciated kids, who were dying. While hunger and poverty are indeed on the rise in America, we're not seeing pictures of children with their ribs sticking out and bulging eyes, which is what our parents were referring to. Indeed, poverty in this country has had an odd, inverse problem: obesity. The result of access to only very poor foods.
I never said any of these things to my kids. Just, "take two bites to try it, because it's healthy for you." They usually wouldn't.

(48,217 posts)early in my childhood, not to mention the fact that they sent food packages to relatives in Germany and that my grandmother's brother was in the Occupation forces in Germany and saw children rummaging through the U.S. base trash cans.
So for my grandmother, it was "the children in Europe are starving."
