That "reformer",New Jersey Gov Christie, Cut $1.6 Billion from Public Education.. Koch update..

GOVERNOR CHRISTIE'S FY14 BUDGET: ANOTHER YEAR OF CUTS TO NJ PUBLIC SCHOOLS

March 21, 2013

"In his proposed FY14 State Budget, Governor Christie continues to pursue his objective of cutting funding to New Jersey public schools far below the levels needed for children to achieve academically, as established in the state's landmark school funding formula – the School Funding Reform Act of 2008 (SFRA).

In testimony to the Senate Budget Committee on March 20, Education Law Center warned legislators that the Governor’s school aid proposal for FY14 is so inadequate that it doesn’t even make up for the loss resulting from the Governor's massive cut in FY11, especially for districts with growing numbers of at-risk and bilingual students and students with disabilities.

ELC also warned that the Governor’s proposal, if adopted, would mark the fourth straight year of either funding cuts, flat funding or minimal aid increases and that this pattern is undermining New Jersey's longstanding commitment to providing all students the resources necessary to achieve the State's academic standards, regardless of where they live or in which public school district they attend school."

What happens is that old people retire from the north east and when they sell their house, they can afford a nicer one for less money in the south and they think the weather will be better. If it turns out not so great, they can't afford to move back because houses cost more - duh. I know a bunch who did the south move when they retired and it is not returnable. And the not retired people were not liberals but probably quite racist., my sister says the neighbors who are the most racist seem to come from the north.

My sister has been telling me to move to NC, but my life is here, I don't know people in NC (well i do but from message boards and we will probably not be good friends since they are like 40 years younger than me.)There is just so much more to do near NYC and friends to visit and people to go on vacation with, et al. Oh and good people to leave my dog with. I don't have to drive anywhere, I can walk to most stores and movie theaters and restaurants here. Plus there are buses down the street to most major cities and trains less than a mile away and senior services up the kazoo. There is nothing like that where she wants me to move. What happens when she dies and I can't drive - there would be no one to help. Here at least there are younger siblings that can help.

I personally know of several people that are moving to Texas because of jobs.

Perry's goal of de regulation, and lesser business taxes has lured businesses there. While the business owners are voting Republican, much of the migrating employee base is not. Diluting the state from purple to blue is an awesome plan!!! Thanks Perry

You don't act like that, bullying a person in public, humiliating them, and not have something wrong inside, and so does that woman with him. It's not a difference of opinion, passion or anything like that.

He shouted her down and denied her the right to speak in a democracy. That is how a country loses its freedoms. It's pathological and he'd be no different than the fascist rulers of Europe in WW2.

Christie's bullying a teacher or she's walking on a bridge.. there is something strange about that.

Not to mention the fact that Christie cut Public Education to pay for giving "2.1 Billion$$$ in corporate tax breaks" .. "more than the entire previous decade"!

Turns out Christie has had a video photographer following him around to catch his Big Bully MOments to post them on their website. Damn proud they were.. not so sure now.

Christie Hates Teachers, Not Just Unions

"New Jersey Education Association secretary treasurer Marie Blistan says public schools are the gateway for kids to reach their fullest potential, but Christie, “Has put targets on teachers’ backs. He has made teachers the enemy of the general public. He is also working very hard to separate private and public unions……….He is putting us in a position where we all need to fight for our own memberships and while we’re all fighting each other, in 14 months he’s going to come in a get re-elected. It’s his scheme to get re-elected and we cannot let that happen. We cannot let that man separate us.”

Blistan also took aim at Christie’s “New Jersey Comeback.”

The first one I ever heard do it was Bill Bennett when he said the Education Department should be abolished. I never did have much use for him, but after he said that, I have hated his guts ever since (and anyone else who speaks down about our Education system and teachers.)
Every day, it's like I wake up in a different world, a different and backward country.

Why vote for a scumbag like that?

I don't get it and it's very disturbing.

More so, that the same poll showed his over all approval stillat 46% with 43% disapproval. Another thread said these latest revelations did not affect the GOP in their support.

Which shows what they want this little fascist and his gang of toadies and enablers enacting the same all across America.

But then, Rand Paul still gets props and he is worse than Christie with his national position and had done a lot of evil deeds. Yet he's popular.

This is definitely not where America should be at this time in history. But it is what is happening.

46. Dilemma when a NJ municipality loses state aid for education:
Thu Jan 23, 2014, 09:03 AM
Jan 2014

Funds are mostly provided through property taxes. Average taxes in suburbs are more than $10,000 annually.

You ordinarily make up for the loss is
of state aid to public education by raising property taxes, but . . .

1. The cost of higher property taxes is reaching the point that folks are moving out of the state, so raising taxes is not a fail-safe option, and

2. Christie campaigned on keeping municipal taxes from going up. There's a statewide edict that all towns/cities must keep annual increases of taxes to 3%. Can't raise taxes higher? Then cut programs.

Christie knows this will be the result. And adding insult to injury, his administration is advocating for charter schools to "share" what meager public funds remain for public schools. It's a vicious cycle: take away money from public schools, claim they're failing, and then take away more money, and give that money to charter schools.

Chris Christie Gets Booed At Seton Hall Commencement

New Jersey governor Chris Christie was loudly booed at Seton Hall's graduation ceremony earlier today, where he delivered a commencement address to the university's 2,281 graduates. One student even yelled "shut up" in the middle of the speech.

The Setonian has more:

Christie acknowledged those who did not welcome him, and began his speech as a "proud alumnus" of Seton Hall.

He referred to a New York Times Magazine cover that referred to him as "the disruptor," and said, "I think a disruptor is someone who is willing to challenge the status quo."

"You need to be a disruptor in the way that your heart and your mind tells you to be a disruptor," he added.

Christie has been a subject of controversy after he proposed heavy budget cuts to New Jersey's education system.

ALEC and Old Yeller

Well, whaddya know: it turns out that Governor Yells-at-people is very much an ALEC guy. From NJ.com:

A Star-Ledger analysis of hundreds of documents shows that ALEC bills are surfacing in New Jersey, where Republican Gov. Chris Christie is trying to remake the state, frequently against the wishes of a Democrat-controlled Legislature.

Drawing on bills crafted by the council, on New Jersey legislation and dozens of e-mails by Christie staffers and others, The Star-Ledger found a pattern of similarities between ALEC’s proposals and several measures championed by the Christie administration. At least three bills, one executive order and one agency rule accomplish the same goals set out by ALEC using the same specific policies. In eight passages contained in those documents, New Jersey initiatives and ALEC proposals line up almost word for word. Two other Republican bills not pushed by the governor’s office are nearly identical to ALEC models.

As a resident of New Jersey, yeah, I got a problem with that.
