Being out of work, my family qualified for Medi-cal through the Obamacare Medicaid expansion that went live on January 1.
Our family was put into the CalOptima part of the plan.
Yesterday, I received the forms to sign-up for a PCP and to pick a health network. I was surprised to see a local doctor's group listed as they have an excellent rep around town, so we picked them as our PCP.
But I was really surprised by the breadth of health networks that were offered. We ended up going with Kaiser Permanente, which was the health provider I had through my last job. I really liked them, and there are tons of KP offices in our area.
Interesting enough, the PCP we picked has their offices in the same building as does Kaiser in our town.
We also qualify for dental insurance, but there were cutbacks to the program, so adults over 21 can only get free tooth extractions right now. Everything else is out of pocket. Children under 21 are still fully covered for everything, including root canals, cleanings, fillings, etc (not braces). The adult cuts are supposed to be reinstated on May 1.
Not bad, considering many people told me Medi-Cal sucked. Turns out that for me it's almost exactly the same as the insurance I had (and that cost me $350 a month).
Still, I'd rather have a job and be buying insurance than qualifying for Medi-cal based on lack of income.

Just a small point though. from www.ca.gov "Medi-Cal is California's Medicaid program."
