Here's a whole lot of stuff you haven't heard about Richard Sherman.

Oddly enough I'm not ordinarily a football fan. But the reactions to football are so similar to the reactions to politics it does hook into something in me when, as now, I have a connection via being a Seattle resident.

And the reactions to Richard Sherman are so polarizing that I can't help but enjoy it. And after seeing all I've seen, I've become a Sherman fan. Good old Buzzfeed, with its love of compilations, has a lot listed. Pay particular attention to his interviews with football fans on Bourbon St. who don't now who he is.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/mjkiebus/23-reasons-richard-sherman-is-quietly-one-of-the-most-likabl

Btw I know I won't change minds. As with politics, people don't much want to admit that things aren't two dimensional.

It makes them feel better about themselves. There are many of us here in Seattle that know that Sherman is more than trash talk. I'm going to have to tell my son that he is a Transformer nerd and a Space Jam fan. My son would love that. And I will have to show my daughter the picture of him dressed up as a penguin. They are her favorite animal. He has done great charity work and despite his talk he is a great team player and best at his position in the league. We here in Seattle love Sherman and all of our Seahawks. Go Hawks!

You know how understated Seattle usually is. Having come from a considerably more passionate culture I'm thoroughly enjoying watching people jump up and down. I do hope "we" win.

but this stuff about Sherman is much ado about nothing. I am surpised this doesn't happen more. People get very amped up playing football, especially when they are about to go to the Super Bowl.

This:

His father has been a garbage man in Los Angeles for over 30 years, waking up at 4 a.m. each morning to go to work. His mother is a senior clerk for California Children’s Services.

And:

Now he's at Stanford!!

And:

He's good looking and provided the media with a teaching moment

So maybe I will watch a bit of the super bowl.

My first reaction to his recent rant, including the choke sign aimed at Kaepernick, and the possibly fake offer to shake Crabtree's hand or help him up, was that it was an unseemly, unsportsmanlike display. Personally, I still view Sherman's behavior as rude and unnecessary, but the more I thought about the situation (post-win adrenaline, the commonplace nature of trash talk in sports, etc.), the less I was inclined to think Sherman a jerk.

However, it had never crossed my mind to call him a thug. As soon as I saw two of my racist relatives call him that on Facebook, I was even more inclined to reconsider just how negatively I ought to view him.

I'm not a sports fan, really. I only saw the interview because my husband was watching it. In a way, it's pretty ironic that guys who love watching grown men give each other brain damage are inclined to call one of those players a thug.

Sherman’s behavior and verbiage was succinct and efficient but it wasn’t even remotely “thuggish.” He didn’t speak in slang, he wasn’t punctuating the air with gang signs, he didn’t use vulgarity. In fact, he didn’t do anything even remotely aggressive. If anything, his loud and egotistical rant was much more WWE than NWA.

I wonder if those calling Sherman a thug use the same word for WWE braggarts.

Today Richard Sherman is being lambasted for his animated post-game interview in which he dared to express emotion outside of the cubic centimeter men of color are allotted. A cornerback in one of the most physically demanding sports in the country—after a game in which bodies were injured and crushed; after a game that required players to be helped off the field—wins a critical game and has a microphone stuck in his face. He says what he says, and suddenly the nation is clutching its pearls, tutting and making pretend-concerned remarks about sportsmanship and graciousness. Today, Tom Brady criticizes Richard Sherman for his lack of “graciousness.” Today, Richard Sherman is being called a thug, and I’m wondering what that word really means.

Does it mean foul-mouthed? After all, Tom Brady was never called a thug. Not when he got in the ref’s face when losing to the Panthers and dropped the F-bomb on national television just two months ago. What about Richie Incognito, when he called Jonathan Martin the n-word on his voicemail? That’s a foul word, isn’t it? I didn’t hear Incognito referred to as a thug either. Or does “thug” mean violent? I’m not sure. Because, despite his animation, Sherman didn’t use a single curse word. He didn’t threaten anyone’s safety or injure anyone.

The truth is, I only ever hear “thug” applied to black people. And not just adult men. A black toddler made news recently when Omaha police posted a video on their website of the child cursing and holding up his middle finger. The child was described as a thug by Omaha police, who insisted they only shared the video to show “the cycle of thuggery.” The video was posted without the knowledge or consent of the child’s mother.

I imagine it's hard not to let the egotism of being an athlete bleed over into the delusion that you're somehow better in general than others. I've said elsewhere that though I hate some of the behaviors of the brats I have some compassion for them. Nobody is born that way and the constant manipulation in order to keep you providing what the public and the profiteers want can do terrible damage. Sherman seems to be surrounded by a well grounded, caring and generous family and I hope he stays cool.

Seattle is continuing to lose its collective mind.

barely knew what was going on here until I read a bunch of stuff last night on it..

Read Tom Brady was criticizing RS and he himself had went off on a Ref in the past. Sounded like hypocrisy to me.. so I like this one..

Oh he's a bad one. Plus I do not like him stupidly being called a "thug".
