Anti-Assimilation Group Begs Bibi: Break up Son’s Dating Non-Jew

The Lehava Organization for the Prevention of Assimilation in the Holy Land appealed to Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu Sunday to break up his son Yair’s relationship with a Norwegian non-Jew.

Yair Netanyahu is dating Sandra Leikange a fellow student, Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya, The Jewish Press reported here earlier today.

Citing the Prime Minister’s late father Ben Tzion as a “Jew and a Zionist who brought up his children with Jewish values,” the organization’s leader Benzi Gopstein wrote in a letter, “It is hard to believe that someone like you would let assimilation through the front door. The repercussions of your son’s actions are far-reaching… What kind of example of this for the son of the Prime Minister of the Jewish State that invests millions of dollars to prevent assimilation in the Diaspora, when assimilation is happening in his own home?”

Gopstein asserted that Prime Minister Netanyahu’s father “would turn over in his grave at the actions of his grandson” and said that even if his non-Jewish girlfriend were to convert, it would not be out of sincerity for Judaism.

7. Israel to spend billions on initiative to bolster Jewish identity in Diaspora

The Israeli government plans to invest more than $1 billion over the next 20 years to strengthen the Jewish identity of Diaspora Jews.

Among the ideas raised during the past weeks of discussions by participants, who have been teleconferencing on a regular basis, are a world Jewish peace corps, pushed by Israel’s Foreign Ministry; the introduction of Hebrew language courses in public schools in cities with large Jewish populations, as proposed by Dr. Steven Nasatir of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago; and the expansion of Birthright-style programs to younger age groups, as well as increasing financial support for Jewish summer camps.

According to Steven Cohen, one of the main benefits of the initiative may be a decrease in the intermarriage rate through the promotion of activities that result in increased socialization among young Jews.

“If you get more Jewish young people together, and they marry each other and marry earlier, we begin to address the problem,” he said. “In addition to strengthening ties to Israel, it could help shift the ways Jews think about being Jewish,” by strengthening the “tribal, ethnic approach to being Jewish.”

MKs slam Netanyahu over his son dating a non-Jewish Norwegian woman

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu failed to set an example for the Jewish people by not preventing his son from dating a non-Jewish Norwegian woman, Shas MK Nissim Ze’ev told The Jerusalem Post Sunday.

According to the report in the Norwegian newspaper Dagen, when the prime minister met Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg for a diplomatic meeting in Davos last week, he boasted of his son Yair’s relationship with Sandra Leikanger from Grimstad, Norway.

Leikanger is a student at the Interdisciplinary Center in Herzliya.

A source close to Netanyahu’s son confirmed that she is not Jewish. But her older sister Ida, who moved to Israel, has converted to Judaism.

“It’s a big problem,” Ze’ev said. “As the prime minister of Israel and the Jewish people, he must display national responsibility via the values he presents inside his own household. I bet it pains him. Any Jew who wants to maintain his roots wants to see his son marry a Jewish girl. There is no shortage of beautiful, successful girls without sowing in the fields of others.”

The anti-assimilation group Lehava wrote on Monday, following the media reports: “Bibi’s son has found a gentile! His father is proud of him and gives legitimacy to the assimilation and destruction of the Jewish people.”

The prime minister’s second wife, Fleur Cates, was also not Jewish but converted to Judaism. Netanyahu and Cates were married between 1981-84.
