Wow I am in shock

don't know what forum to put this in so kick it out if it's not in the right one.

WE JUST BECAME GRANDPARENTS
our daughter in law gave an emergency birth about 2 hours ago. Baby had a good birth weight
6lbs 7oz

Does anyone know where to find a cheap bassinett? I thought we had about 3 more weeks to do this!

Be careful if you buy a used bassinet. The previous owner may have
unknowingly used harmful chemicals to clean it or the bedding.

28. Use a Dresser Drawer or whatever Drawer you have Not Composite....

No...Moses Baskets made in China (fumes/chemicals used to kill the insects to transport here to USA) use a Dresser drawer or whatever drawer you can clear out that is "wood and not composite" and line it with clean washed blanket or towels. An infant will be very happy in a small space comfortably lined with washed towel or blanket. Make sure you use "no fragrance" washing detergent and this little one will be happy as anything.

My Grandmother had six children. She told the story of the two of them "coming early" and they'd loaned out the bassinet...so her husband said "let's clean out one of our dresser drawers..the little one...and they Did it and worked out great!

Hope this helps! Congratulations!

45. It's amazing

I thought, before it happened to someone I know, that you had to be pretty stupid to not know. But this gal, a fellow student in college, she was kind of heavy but all was normal until her birthday when she was in horrible pain... had her husband take her to the hospital not knowing why she was so ill. After a short time in the ER a social worker came in to talk to her because she was in labor and about to have her fist child. She was dumbfounded to say the least. The whole neighborhood (she was a barista with a following) got together and helped her husband round up furniture and clothes for their surprise daughter. We started a fundraising project for them, they were totally unprepared for the expenses of a child - they were using BC after all, and school expenses were their primary focus at the time.

I'm glad that the folks in the OP were pretty much prepared for this, even though it happened a little early.

57. Thanks that's quite a story

we as parents for our son whose child this is were prepared for his arrival, just not the speed of it. Our son was born (our first child) with just 26 minutes of labor on the day after Christmas. Because our regular doctor was off, all they had was a staff doctor and he was more scared than we were.

29. Congradulations.

On the bassinett, I highly recommend just using a car seat like these: http://www.toysrus.com/family/index.jsp?categoryId=2256195

They're basically baby carriers that latch into a base that stays in the car. Have the baby sleep in the carrier (in the house- leave the base in the car). Use a blanket to prop up the leg-end so the baby's mostly level. The baby sleeps much better because the baby's legs are supported and seat envelops them - the baby did just come from a rather confined environment. Also means the baby can nap wherever is convenient instead of taking them to wherever their bassinet is.

Additionally, it avoids the flat-head and developmental problems from "back to sleep" without introducing potential dangers from not-back-to-sleep.

After a couple months, put them in a "regular" crib and skip the bassinet.

The cheapest quick bassinett is a bureau drawer. Poor people have been using one of those for as long as we have had furniture. I've also seen nice, reasonably priced baby furnishings at K-Mart.

probably be pretty cheap. I was going to suggest a dresser drawer, but I'm not sure how you could pad that and stay within the back-to-sleep recommendations.

I'm in the process of finishing a baby blanket for a grandchild about to be born any minute. I had better hurry.

You aren't the only grandparent to be ill prepared in spite of almost 9 months of waiting.

Is this your first grandchild?

There is nothing better than being a grandparent.

Walmart. Even on Amazon the nicer ones top out at $100 (we had a small baby and used one of the nice ones for 6 mos before investing in a crib!), but you can easily get a basket for under $50.

47. YAY!!!! That's wonderful news!

YAY!!!! It's amazing how those births kinda jump at you. When I went on maternity leave, I thought I had at least two weeks more - just to get off my feet and catch up on some rest from a VERY demanding job. No dice. My daughter had other plans. So did my body. I went to what I thought was just another prenatal appointment and the doctor checked me out and frowned at the results and said - "uh - meet you at the hospital at 2pm. You're having this baby TODAY." I was thoroughly toxemic and the pregnancy could not go the full distance. Due date? What due date?

79. Try want ads in newspaper

We have a column "items under $100," also try calling Salvation Army or Goodwill.

The baby uses this stuff for such a short time it's a pity to have to buy one new.

Congratulations!!

(Better to put money into a safe crib with a good mattress - baby'll use for 3 years).
