(297,187 posts)the fuck attention to how the gops are not supporting them in Congress.
It must feel like quite a bitter betrayal when the guys who waved the flag in your face are stabbing you repeatedly in the back. I hope many others see this and WAKE UP.

(403 posts)there are a lot of people in the military who care about politics, other peoples' mostly, and the sad thing is that they are the ones who are in control of promotion, retention, and jail time for those who dare to disagree...

(2,334 posts)Given the circumstances, Dad managed to be a relaxed and easy going guy most of the time. My Mother told me that when the Gulf War started, he was having nightmares. Dad was worried about the troops. I guess you never get over the shit, just learn to live with it if you're lucky. He passed last December at the age of 89.

(4,407 posts)Sometimes it takes a while to understand that things people once thought to be true are no longer true, like "Republicans support the millitary." It's more appropriate now (and may have been before) that Republicans support USING the millitary.

(9,721 posts)I'm what they call in the military a FOG, fucking old guy.
I served during the Viet Nam "war". In intelligence and then
nuclear weapons. I was a Hippie in the Military, believe me, not the only one.
Most of the guys I served with were Dems, we all protested the war, in ranks and out.
Most of us had a college degree though. Now a days, we are protected by -let's just say - those of a lesser education. Critical thinking is not paramount, as it was years ago.
Once you enter battle, you change.
That change may be quick, maybe slower but you change. You reflect, you think.
You know that your being used, that's everyday, that's your reality.
Vets know.
Thank you for me letting this out. Nothing personal.

(15,241 posts)Note that this didn't include many above a bird (Lt. Col.) My guess is that the higher-flying brass were just as pragmatic about their choices.
Most of them were not hawks at all. Most were thoughtful wouldn't have wanted to be engaged in any activities that weren't really defending their country. However, everyone gets slowly drawn into the drum-thumping.
There used to be a license tag in VA - 10SNE1 - that you?

(4,407 posts)I've always leaned far left in my thinking, both politically and just in the way I do work (I strongly tend to think up different and new ways of doing things). Back when I was a freshman in HS, a guy doing some maintenance asked me whether I was going to join the millitary after school and I said, essentially, hell no. I couldn't articulate it at the time, but just in general, I didn't trust the military to not get me killed with something stupid (like sending a ship into an irradiated zone), and that was a couple decades ago! Now, it's much worse.
Any kid going into the military is almost forfeiting their lives (ok, that's maybe a bit over the top). But after the stories about Fukishima, then the VA benefits being fillibustered, then just every-the-fuck-thing else, well, I can see why congress-people don't want their kids in the military.

(7,316 posts)A lot of us, unfortunately, have family members we can hardly talk to anymore. I have one brother in the Navy who is a staunch republican. I seldom communicate with him, but I just had to know how he felt about this recent GOP filibuster. His reply:
"This is a no win argument, and I do not want to participate in it. If you wish to discuss any other topic other than politics, I would be happy to entertain."
He's never had any problem discussing politics before.

(9,966 posts)I don't know how to put the picture up but it was a list of all 40 Republican senators by name, with the legend "40 Republican senators--and zero Democrats--voted to kill the Veterans jobs bill". Above the picture, here is what I wrote:
I take extreme umbrage at this. Both Senators from Tennessee are Republicans and my son is a veteran from Tennessee. Senators Alexander and Corker
shame on you! You voted to send these soldiers to war, but you won't help them now that they're home! You guys SUCK!
I should probably put it on Sen. Corker and Sen. Alexander's Facebook pages. I now live in Virginia and MY senators voted FOR the bill.

(14 posts)As a Vietnam disabled Vet this is a travesty I'm sorry that this happened but reading his letter to go on say that the liberal Democrats are destroying our nation and the America as far as I'm concerned he's just another Republican that blames liberals for what their party does .Party Murry never wanted those cuts but it was Ryan that pushed just as they do on everything.Yeah that's right Sgt, Patty got Ryan in a head lock until he cried Uncle and I'll say again Your party came up with the idea.

(297,187 posts)It starts out dealing with reality and ends up blaming "liberal dems" for destroying America.
Turns out he has no clue. I probably shouldn't have posted it.. but there it is. That is one reason why I added the second graphic and wondered what CMS Wooten thought of the latest blockage for VETS by the Republicons in the Senate.
I thank you for your service all those years ago.

(1,076 posts)To me, these guys that voted against the bill are unpatriotic people. Not deserving to be called American. Their action to principal, tosses those individuals with unique needs on the trash heat. I've read informed my about some of the unique needs of our returning veterans. Pass the bill. Don't talk about offsets, if you or a member of your party didn't talk about offset or raising revenue for the prosecution of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. This NO vote is leaving a troop behind.

(14 posts)Cha thank you for posting this info needs to get out,and frankly I have nothing against the Sgt being a Republican But I do AS A LIBERAL AMERICAN that got shot at had buddies that were LIBERAL that Were killed I take exception When anybody service man or not blame liberals for the nation's woes.Anybody with half a mind and not blinded by this veil of hate can see where the problem starts and ends .And one last thing Sarge did it bother you that the 8 million in food stamp cuts are going to have an I'll effect on many service families by the way That was a Republican idea or do you really care cause I got mine but I do care cause their messing with I don't know Sarge what do you think??

(9,350 posts)The Democratic Party needs to use this information during the 2014 election cycle. This is an example of the Republican Party not supporting military personnel. It should be used against each of the Republicans listed who are running for office.
