1. He actually said al Qaeda is "more a myth than a reality."

In Karzai’s opinion, al Qaeda is “more a myth than a reality”and the majority of the United States’ prisoners here were innocent.

He is probably right. Al Qaeda is nothing more than a boogey man to perpetuate the waronterra. As a functioning organization, it ceased being a threat to US mainland security years ago. The splinter groups and sympathizers of AQ persist, but they are local organizations, and often, to the extent they target the US, are a response to US intervention or presence.

4. As far as I recall, the term was coined by Western Intelligence services

to refer to a disparate group of nebulously comparable anti-Western parties that weren't necessarily even in communication with each other. The word means "the Base", which had the unfortunate consequence of automatically lending the phenomenon the appearance of being a structured organisation with clearly defined ideology and goals.

Naturally one is free to benefit from treating it as such without ever stating outright that it is such. It's quite clever.

But I can't remember where I read all that now. I'm sure I could go dig up links...

I am not a fan of drawing large circles around a whole bunch of vaguely related stuff and calling it something so you can lend legitimacy to your wish to oppose them/it. I think that's a very, very bad idea.

But then, of course, I have been at the sharp end of the phenomenon. I still struggle to convince free thinking, politically unblinkered non-sheep all over the Internet that the term "gay agenda" is a term coined for the sake of its being coined rather than for the sake of making good faith attempts at describing reality.
