A Democratic lawmaker in Alabama on Tuesday claimed that Republicans who oppose abortion would be supportive of the procedure "if their daughter got pregnant by a black man," according to the Birmingham News.
State Rep. Alvin Holmes (D) made the comment in response to Rep. Mary Sue (R), who compared a bill that would ban abortions after the detection of a fetal heartbeat to the landmark Supreme Court case Brown vs. the Board of Education.
"Ninety-nine percent of the all of the white people in here are going to raise their hand that they are against abortion," Holmes said, according to the News. "On the other hand, 99 percent of the whites that are sitting in here now, if their daughter got pregnant by a black man, they are going to make their daughter have an abortion."
"They aren't let her have the baby. Listen, you know the truth sometimes hurts," he continued. "All this stuff about abortion and this and that -- thats just a con game. Thats for whites, it aint for blacks."

(19,768 posts)99% of whites are so racist they'd change their beliefs and abort if the baby is fathered by a black man?
Or is that just 99% of whites who don't favor abortion who are racist?
Either is a preposterous and racist statement and Holmes is saying one or the other.
Is it possible this issue might be about a belief in when life begins, and not race?

(19,768 posts)I believe many who are against abortion in most cases are indeed concerned for what they consider to be another living human being.
While it may be about a woman owning her body for the pro-abortion side, and about protecting what they consider unborn life for the anti-abortion side, I'm pretty sure the side that sees the issue as being about race is infinitesimal. It is really a ridiculous thing to drag race into it, maligning one racial group in the process.

Seems exclusion from society can affect the womb, too.

(6,679 posts)because Alvin Holmes really believes 99% of whites are racist.
It's not just about breeding and hammering out the racists. It's also about the actions and time required so that the Alvins don't have a reason to feel this way.
