It's their big holiday season. And the one time many from the provinces get a long enough leave to get back home see their families.

It is a massive thing. Similar movements happen in Japan twice a year. Obon in August and New Years in Dec.

I knew many people had moved far away for work, and that the New Years celebration was two weeks long. But I never thought it through to realize the mass migration the holiday brings.
