Though the vote was 47 for cloture and 52 against there are 48 in favor of cloture (with Reid's vote, who voted against for procedural reasons) and 52 against (with Cornyn's vote, who did not vote).
However, if you count each Senator as representing half their respective states, you get this:
48 Senators supporting cloture and Obama's nominee represent 170 million people.
52 Senators oppose cloture and Obama's nominee and represent 145 million people.
But of course, because the Senate is not democratic and Wyoming has two votes (pop. 582,000), California has two votes (pop. 38,332,000) and the District of Columbia has Zero votes (pop. 646,000).
Of course when the Senate was created, a man who looked like Obama's nominee didn't even count as a full person in many states
Having a government that gives some voters more representation than others has consequences.

(15,438 posts)Deep blue District of Columbia has zero Senators but sixty four thousand more people than deep-red Wyoming. California only has two Senators but nearly 38.5 million people?? This isn't democracy. This is tyranny by the minority.
and rec'd!
