It should speak for itself, but "deformers" aren't really interested in test scores or (gasp) learning or facts. They are interested in making money from privatizing schools. Bashing teachers' unions is merely a means to this end.

Here's an impossibly good statistic for union defenders, dug up by the Maureen Downey at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Only five states do not allow collective bargaining for educators, effectively banning teachers unions. Those states and their SAT/ACT rankings are as follows:

South Carolina – 50th

North Carolina – 49th

Georgia – 48th

Texas – 47th

Virginia – 44th

Meanwhile ground zero of the union battle, Wisconsin, is ranked 2nd in the country.

Virginia is the only one of the five to have climbed to the national average in test scores.

http://www.higheredinfo.org/dbrowser/?year=2007&level=nation&mode=graph&state=0&submeasure=35

and of the 24 "Right-to-Work" Anti-union states,

13 of them fall BELOW the national average on standardized tests.

It seems as if Wisconsin's leadership is intent upon dumbing-down their educational system.

On a scale that includes Europe and Asia, that's getting way way down there.

Virginia is like many different states in one. Some of those states are crazy.

NoVa, or Northern Virginia, the suburbs of DC, has excellent public schools, including Thomas Jefferson High School, often considered the best high school in the country, in Fairfax County. Of course, this area leans blue ... in this purple state where some of the red areas are very red. And, extremely backwards.

I retired from teaching 5th grade in NY 24 years ago; my salary was $55,000 thanks to union-negotiated contracts. We also determined class size, curriculum content, working conditions, etc.We had one of the best school districts in Westchester County. I live in SC; the schools here have none of the above, sad to say. Unions build strong schools and optimize learning.
