Oddly enough a significant percentage of people who post on this forum are significantly to the left of our centre-right pro-corporatist dronemaster-in-chief. And some of them are sufficiently aware of the world outside the US to recognise empty-headed bullshit when they see it, even if it is coming from the First Lady--which, the fact that she's in China or anywhere else in the first place is kind of fucked up anyway, honestly. No other democracy has this whole quasi-royal thing of the spouse of the head of government representing it in foreign countries in an official capacity. For all that Americans like to put down royalty, a lot of them seem pretty enamoured of the basic concept if you call the king a president instead.

(2,347 posts)that's why you see that. Over there, the Queen's the Head, the PM's a guy elected out of the lower House to do the day-to-day running of the government. Separation that makes for far less deference given to Cameron.
Other non-monarchies have a President and a Prime Minister. Here all we have is the President. Note that for the purposes of comparison, Boehner and Reid are closer to the role of Prime Minister, but it's hardly exact, as they don't get to go overseas like Cameron does to represent the views of Britain.
It's an old system, and as written the President had roughly the powers of the King of England at that time, but was elected instead of getting there by inheritance. The Senate was roughly the House of Lords, the House roughly the House of Commons.
Oddly enough, they wrote the Constitution with the model of where they came from in their heads.

In their minds, the collapse has to happen. Its a necessary component of ending the current system and getting to their Utopian dream.
For the right wing, its a Christian controlled government. Church is State, and they control it all.
For the far left, after the collapse, obviously a socialist utopia ensues.
They hate the President for not allowing the collapse they need to "start over". And we were so close back in 2008 and 2009.
The collapse they dream of is looking less and less likely.
And at times, they get very testy about it.

(32,096 posts)it here as well. Many of us on the left would like nothing better than a socialist economic system. So far, aside from the Paris Commune (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paris_Commune) we have not seen socialist economics partnered with democracy. And that experiment lasted exactly two months.
Even recently in Greece where the KKE is a real communist party we all saw what happened when push came to shove - Golden Dawn (the fascists) rose up. I believe that would happen even more quickly here.
We have no equivalent to KKE here. Our "communist" party endorsed Obama. We are ill-equipped for a socialist take-over in this country.

(53,661 posts)There is nothing in the history of the USA that would give any other outcome. Nor in our present society with armed rightwingers and theocrats who desire the death of milliions. We cannot be decieved. They vote fo this every year.
Those who advocate that chaos is liberating are libertarians who would not care that many would die for nothing while things settle out. Others, who claim to be of a different utopia mindset, also do not care about those who will die as they expect it won't be them.
With every act that shuts down democratic process and civil society, people die. Not necessarily in public where the crocodile tears are shed, or the media has good ratings, but they do. Gingrich government shut down - people died; Boehner shutd own - people died and lives were disrupted beyond repair; yet some here cheer such things on.
I say they have no real skin in this game or they would not be loving the prospect of this. They want a Constitutional convention because they are too lazy to do the daily work to make a democracy work and want a quick fix. Guess who calls for a Constitional convention - Rand Paul, Paul Ryan, and the rest who are o the Koch brothers payroll and we know what they would do.
Some here make Democrats look like Teabaggers. But then, they hate the Democratic Party so much, I cannot call them Democrats no matter what they say. They would gleefully toss out all the things in the platform to protect women, minorities and the poor, and think nothing of it for their own ends.
And the more they sully our brand, which stands for that platform of rights and values, the less voting people will do and that serves the far right and the theocrats and the status quo that hurts people now that Democrats are working to help against all odds and will be the first to point the finger when it doesn't help what they 'say' they believe. After all, you cannot hate the only engine for change you have and expect different result than what the GOP Libertarian Teas want.

1: Social promotion because students need to be with their friends.
2: Recording the grade once a student gets a passing grade (even if they student failed it 50 times)
3: Letting kids sleep in class because we should only teach the ones who care
4: Teaching to the standardized test and only the standardized test
5: Forging teacher letters of recommendation
6: Fraudulent transcripts that show straight A's because "gradebooks don't matter."
7 Allowing influential people's children a free ride because of "guan xi."
8: Encouraging some of the worst forms of bullying and hazing imagined because it toughens up children
9: 60 - 65 students in a class
10: School from 7:30 in the morning until 8:00 at night
11: Using students as unpaid janitorial staff in the classrooms, halls and bathrooms
12: Corporal punishment
13: Passing students because they aged one year rather than learning because no student fails
14: Labeling LD students are stupid and problems because "no child has learning problems."
15: Discipline codes with no teeth where students can attempt to stab another and get away with it because "it was just a small knife." (Biology class, Jinling High School, Nanjing. . .3rd period, Thursday, Nov 17th. True story)
I'm sorry I called her clueless on this issue. She knows more about it that I do. She needs to educate the other foreign teachers and me at my school about good Chinese education policy. We have declared war on education as a society since 1982 when "A Nation At Risk" came out under Reagan. Each reform movement has destroyed education more.
Her husband's "Race to the Top" is just another line of "A Nation At Risk" based ideas where everything falls square on the classroom teacher if the students fails and is the guidance of the administrator if the student passes.

(1,638 posts)This is what the Washington Post is reporting:
One of the reasons I have come to China is to learn more about education around the world, Obama said at the top of the meeting. Its personal, because I wouldnt be where I am today without my parents investing and pushing me to get a good education.
The discussion included a critique of standardized testing, which is rigidly applied in Chinas educational system and also has been a source of debate in U.S. schools. The group, including Obama, agreed that tests track only one measure of a students potential, said a senior White House official who was in the meeting and agreed to tell reporters about it on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the discussion. One participant spoke of the challenges ethnic minorities face in China, telling Obama of a predominantly minority province in China with a school-age population of more than a million and only two high schools.
The conversation was the most substantial interaction Obama has had with Chinese citizens, away from government officials, thus far.
You live in China. Good for you. That doesn't mean that whenever anyone mentions China you can make up stuff about what they said. You've presented no evidence that Michelle Obama wants to model the US education system after the Chinese one.

(1,741 posts)"The President is a fucking piece of shit..." and approval of every single thing Obama does. I believe there is a middle ground. I believe most reasonable people on DU and elsewhere would agree there's a middle ground. A vast middle ground. But some people want to make it an either/or proposition - either you go along with calling the President a POS or you're an authoritarian, pompom-waving yes-man.
Why can't people simply disagree with a policy or program and express that disgreement like a thoughtful grown-up rather than a loudmouth drunk? Are we going to be allowing phrases like "subhuman mongrel" next? Because we're not that far from it now. This is supposed to be a Democratic board. I don't think it's really stifling the free exchange of ideas to request that the Democratic leader of the country not be referred to as a fucking POS. But apparently that makes me the Thought Police.

Leave that shit to the Tea Party Patriots. I prefer my patriots to critically think and evaluate our leaders, and ask them to be forthright and honest in their undertaking on our behalf.
Also, the First Lady is not a fashion plate or China doll to be fawned over and never spoken ill of. Good God, give the woman some freaking credit as a public figure who is not perfect, she makes mistakes but she's also a big girl who can handle criticism. Seriously, I never miss the unrec button so much as when I see Michelle Obama fashion posts. She's the FLOTUS. Of course she dresses well! and that really upsets me. It does. I don't give a flying rainbow glitter pony phuck WHO SAYS IT.
I don't care how long a person has been here or how many posts they have.
A particular OP was given an awful lot of excuses by a lot of members to justify his words. They justified a person who is employed as a writer and author. I'm not that stupid to not know exactly what was written, and if I am misunderstood, I await an explanation from the person that wrote the OP, as opposed to the people that justified those words. The OP has said NOTHING. Nada, ZIP.
Fuck that.
And I am not even going to get started on the First lady OP. She went to China as a dignitary. That callout was totally mis communicated. At least she wasn't called a POS wife of a used car salesman.
(and no, I am not going to link. This is GD, I'm fairly sure you all know exactly what I am talking about)
Until GD decides that calling the president a piece of shit used-car salesman with the addition of From my heart and soul, fuck you. is not acceptable, GD is going to continue to drain downward.
Priorities are a good thing. We are members of an internet/message board community. As such we are resonsible for being good caretakers of this community. Lately GD just looks like a shit fest that doesn't want to talk about anything, or solving anything.
As a pre-emptive statement: I know the difference between criticism and endorsing full blown bull-shit lies.

This cult of personality, this hero worship of posters like WP is ridiculous and entirely unmerited: they've never accomplished anything besides putting a few overwrought, often misdirected words onto a computer screen. Yet they can never do anything wrong in many DUers' eyes, and if anyone dare in any way criticize, post after post of derision is made.
