Disasters Foreign and Domestic

It’s Monday, Truthseekers. Not much happy news to report from the weekend.

Part of the mystery of the Malaysian aircraft disappearance may have been solved as new high-tech satellite images and date indicated plane wreckage in a remote part of the Indian ocean. None of the debris has been retrieved, but Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak announced today that the plane “ended” its journey. ABC news reports:

New satellite data reveals that missing Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 “ended” its journey in a “remote location” of the southern Indian Ocean, Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said today.

“This is a remote location, far from any possible landing sites. It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean,” a somber Razak said during a media briefing.

The new information came from British satellite maker Inmarsat, which used a new type of analysis never before used to try and pinpoint the plane’s last known location, Razak said.

“[Inmarsat] has been performing calculations on the data using type of analysis never before used in an investigation of this sort and they have been able to shed more light on MH370. Based on the new analysis, Inmarsat and the [British] Accidents Investigation Branch have concluded that MH370 flew along the southern corridor and that it’s last position was in the middle of the Indian Ocean, west of Perth,” Razak said.

He noted that Malaysia Airlines had already been in touch with the families of the 289 people on board, saying that he knew the past few weeks had been “heartbreaking” for them and that this latest development must be harder still.

Obviously, there is still no information available about the cause of the crash, assuming this new information proves correct.

Disasters have dominated recent news cycles. A mudslide in Washington state has claimed 8 lives, and a dozen more possible victims are still missing, as the Seattle Times describes:

Hopes dimmed Sunday for finding survivors in the nearly one square mile of muck and debris left by a mudslide that killed at least eight people and demolished dozens of houses. More than a dozen remained missing, but it was unclear just how many.

“We didn’t see or hear any signs of life out there today,” said Travis Hots, chief of Snohomish County Fire Districts 21 and 22, during a Sunday afternoon news conference. Gov. Jay Inslee warned of grim days ahead during a news conference at Arlington City Hall. “I have a sense we are going to have some hard news here,” he said.

The rain-soaked hillside that slid away Saturday morning was the same one that had partially collapsed in 2006. The area is about 16 miles east of Arlington.

Officials think recent heavy rainfall made the ground unstable, triggering the mudslide. The weather out West has been so unpredictable (what climate change?) it’s almost impossible to predict what kind of environmental accidents lie ahead.

Speaking of,did you hear about the new oil spill in the beleaguered Gulf of Mexico, Truthseeker? Just in time for the migratory birds to bathe in the black ooze. CBS Reports:

No timetable has been set to reopen a major U.S. shipping channel after nearly 170,000 gallons of tar-like oil spilled into the Texas waterway, but more help was being called in Monday to contain the spill and protect important shorebird habitat. A barge carrying about 900,000 gallons of the heavy oil collided with a ship Saturday in the busy Houston Ship Channel, spilling as much as a fifth of its cargo into one of the world’s busiest waterways for moving petrochemicals, according to the Coast Guard.

The channel, part of the Port of Houston, typically handles as many as 80 vessels daily. But it will remain closed for a third day Monday, and the Coast Guard said there was no timetable on when it may reopen.

Oil had been detected 12 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico by Sunday, and as many as 60 vessels were either waiting to get in or out. The Coast Guard – which called it a “significant spill” – said it expected to deploy more containment booms Monday, with 24 vessels working to skim the oil. Environmental groups said the spill occurred at an especially sensitive time. The channel in Texas City, about 45 miles southeast of Houston, has important shorebird habitat on both sides, and tens of thousands of wintering birds are still in the area.

“The timing really couldn’t be much worse since we’re approaching the peak shorebird migration season,” said Richard Gibbons, conservation director of the Houston Audubon Society.

Ironically, this news neatly coincided with the 25th anniversary of the historic Exxon -Valdez oil spill that dumped 11 million gallons of crude into Prince William Sound off the coast of Alaska. The ecosystem suffered permanent damage, as CNN describes:

The sound’s coastal ecosystem is permanently damaged. Thousands of gallons of Exxon Valdez oil still pollute the beaches; this oil is still toxic and still hurting the ecosystem near the shore.

The government considers, as of 2010, only 13 of the 32 monitored wildlife populations, habitats and resource services that were injured in the spill as fully “recovered” or “very likely recovered.” Some are still listed today as “not recovering.” This includes a pod of orcas, which lost 15 of its 22 members after the spill, and has not produced a calf since. Given only one older female is left, scientists are certain that this unique pod of orcas will go extinct — it’s just a matter of time. The government conclusion is that “there appears to be no hope for recovery.”

The “not recovering” list also includes Pacific herring, one of the sound’s keystone species. Once the source of a vibrant commercial fishery, herring declined so precipitously that a fishery closed, and has not reopened.

Once the source of a vibrant commercial fishery, herring declined so precipitously that a fishery closed, and has not reopened. Eight inches long, herring once swam in schools of a million or more, a sudden flash of their silver undersides confusing predators. In April, their spawning turned the bays and lagoons milky white. More than 40 species — bald eagles, brown bears, seals, humpback whales, tufted puffins, murres — depend on these small fish.
Those of us who knew the sound before the spill, the “bright and spacious wonderland” described a century ago by John Muir’s expedition, and who spend time in the magnificent coastal wilderness that remains, chafe at the idea of passing this 25th anniversary off as merely a historical event, of simply noting the date and then returning to business as usual.

Persistent oil poisoning, and a cascade of ecological effects, continue. There’s not much we can do now for Prince William Sound, short of protecting it from more harm. But we can keep from repeating our mistakes elsewhere. This is, after all, why we pay attention to history.

Except we don’t pay attention to history. Americans in general, and our elected leaders in particular, seem to suffer from severe short term memory loss. Forgetting how many children die each year for lack of sensible gun safety laws. How many species go extinct for want of basic environmental protections. How many ozone alert days we suffer for lack of adequate air quality measures. How many of our loved ones suffer and die for lack of fundamental health care coverage. How many gallons of contaminated water we drink because of lax regulations on water quality and ongoing chemical pollution from Big Corporations.

And how many of our servicemen and women we send into the meat grinder to kill and be killed for our senseless, pointless, never-ending terror wars.

Will we ever learn?

Ralps, does tonight's gif choice by chance have anything to do with the incident in Chicago today?
