You are wrong if you said the selfish, goofy hero of Atlas Shrugged. His name is Galt. (initial cap only).
GALT is a corporation. And, no, it has nothing to do with gold, the only form of money that Ayn Rand's heroes believed in, and that went down 30% last year while stocks went up 26%.
GALT is the ticker symbol for Galectin Therapeutics, a pharmaceutical company whose stock just went up because of a positive clinical trial for a drug to treat fatty liver disease. I hope I'm allowed to use that f word. Many comments have been hidden on this site for using that word.
Here is the link to information about the company at Yahoo Finance:

I want to make it clear that I'm not touting Galectin Therapeutics. The worst time to buy a stock is after a big jump, like GALT took this morning. And it isn't unusual for a pharmaceutical stock to make a big jump or take a huge dive after results of a clinical trial are announced. Chances are excellent that GALT will soon take a big plunge and even go out of business in the near future.
I just thought this whole GALT thing was interesting because the far-right Republican/Teabagger political handbook is Atlas Shrugged, and the catch phrase for hundreds of pages of the novel has to do with the question about the identity of a guy named Galt. The two most revered names in recent conservative history are probably Galt and Reagan.
In Atlas Shrugged, the "heroes" believed in gold rather than paper money, just like many of today's conservatives. Rush Limbaugh and Glenn Beck are rich partly because of their commercials for businesses related to buying and selling gold. I think it's funny that listeners who took their advice and invested in gold lost 30% last year while sensible investors saw 26% gains in their stocks.
If Galectin Therapeutics, ticker symbol GALT, stays on the "top gainer" list when the market closes today don't be surprised if a financial reporter says what I said: "Who is GALT?"

(9,610 posts)I consider that spam.
Discuss politics, issues, and current events. No posts about Israel/Palestine, religion, guns, showbiz, or sports unless there is really big news. No conspiracy theories. No whining about DU.
What poliltics, issues, or current events is this OP about?

(1,935 posts)After a stock jumps up is the WORST time to buy.
The top political quote in the history of the conservative movement is "Who is John Galt?"
Today people are asking "What is GALT?" Some people will find that interesting.
PowerToThePeople
(9,610 posts)And, even if they were, what the heck does it have to do with this company? Other than the ticker symbol being GALT, nothing...
JEFF9K
(1,935 posts)I am on DU ... and when I saw the list of top gainers on the financial site the first thing I thought of was "What is GALT?" Then I thought about Atlas Shrugged and it's catch phrase "Who is John Galt?" It was interesting to me, as someone following both politics and the stock market. Should I consider that my "morning stretch?"
PowerToThePeople
(9,610 posts)then you have my apologies. The internet is full of people pumping stocks for day trading purposes. You must know this since you visit Yahoo finance. You obviously follow the market on the net and are therefore familiar with stock spammers. This post read just like the ones they post all the time.

(2,061 posts)I've got fatty liver and my Doctor never made a big deal about it. It was detected because I had a blood test for some minor surgery and my liver values were out of whack. Once they determined it was fatty liver it was no big deal and the surgery went forward.
I suspect that there are variations in severity and maybe mine was just enough to throw off the liver enzymes but not enough to worry about.
I'll ask my Doctor next time I see him.
This is good news because unless you're rich and get to the front of the line, there's a big demand for livers and of course there's not enough which didn't seem to stop Larry Hagman, David Crosby and Steve Jobs.

(1,935 posts)... One of the top quotes in conservative history is "Who is John Galt?" It just happens that today a stock that no one has heard of is one of the top gainers, and it has the ticker symbol GALT. Many people will see the list of top stock gainers and wonder about GALT, just as in the number one conservative book of all time, Atlas Shrugged, people asked "Who is Galt?"
