Gays And Lesbians More Popular Than Evangelicals Among Voters, Poll

On Thursday the Human Rights Campaign and Americans for Marriage Equality released the results of a study, entitled "Victory In Sight", conducted by Greenberg Quinlan Rosner Research and TargetPoint Consulting that investigated the nuances of voters' views on marriage equality. More than a simple matter of "Should gays and lesbians be allowed to marry?", the poll looked at shifts in opinions over time, reasons for such shifts, and differing opinions among ages, faiths, geographic areas and more.

The first question addressed acceptance, comparing voters' favorable or unfavorable feelings towards gays and lesbians and towards evangelical Christians. In a nearly 80% Christian-identified country, the results might surprise you.

Fifty-three percent of voters said they felt favorably toward gays and lesbians, compared to 42% who felt favorably toward evangelicals. Eighteen percent said they felt unfavorably toward gays and lesbians, while 28% reported unfavorable feelings toward evangelicals.

This may not be wholly surprising, however, as there is split even within the religious community over views on same-sex marriage. The poll found that voters who attend monthly or yearly worship services favor legal same-sex marriage by a large margin -- 64% and 68%, respectively. By contrast, respondents who attend weekly religious services oppose same-sex marriage by roughly the same margin -- 63%.

2. I guess maybe religion itself isn't the problem so much as *too much* religion.

So long as "faith" is balanced by what one might call secular rationalism, believers tend to be relatively reasonable folk.

I accepted Christ as my Savior when I was a young man. Christ has never told me to hate anyone. His words were to feed the poor, help the sick and afflicted. He never preached for anything but humility and none of this real Murican stuff. During Vietnam, I felt jesus was with me, not because our cause was just but because I had accepted him . Unlike many of my more more professing Christians I did not believe I would die and burn in Hell. Jesus only taught us to do good. He never taught us to hate anyone for their sexual orientation, and he certainly displayed his anger and his dismissal of those who seek only money or power.
Maybe many here believe I am a simpleton raised in a restrictive patriarchial home but let me assure you that I have a relatively high IQ and I chose to be a Christian with little prompting from my parents.
So many profess Christianity but only seek religiousity and the respect or favor they can garner from others in their respective communities. I have observed so many times, a highly respected and very wealthy member of the church is found to be committing a crime. Of course many say not to judge that he fell from grace etc. , but the crimes seem to have been occurring for most of the time he was help in such respect.
There are good Christians out there. They do not hate, they believe Jesus's lessons and they work to help others including Gays and Lesbians or any others in need. I love people, but I feasr so many on this site, do not understand that about real Christians and push us away.
Whether you believe the world started with a big bang by chance or whether you believe God created it, we all have goodness in us. it is that light of goodness we must share with each others and the world. Lets knock off on some of the hatred and arrogance and we will all be better people.
In any case, I welcome the news that gays and lesbians are being more accepted. I have been accepting many of them as very good friends for a very long time.

We have no problem with Christians that believe Christ's actual message. It's the hypocrites we do not accept.

You recognize that Christ didn't say, "Hate the gay."

Go in peace. Or stay in peace, whatever.

11. Others do not know what is in your heart, some of your fellow 'faithful' are dangerous

and must be avoided for the sake of not being beaten or libeled. So it is on YOU to demonstrate with your actions who you are and how you love others. It is NOT the responsibility of others to inspect each cross waving dogma shouter to see if they are 'the good kind'.
So what do you do, to show others your charitable nature?
I always ask Christians who bitterly complain that others misunderstand them how they deal with the passage in which Christ tells his followers that they will be misunderstood, mocked and even persecuted for his sake and commands them to rejoice and be very glad about that? Why do you folks never rejoice and instead cast blame?
How do you hear Christ say 'when mocked for me, rejoice' and instead tell others to 'knock off the hate' while your Christian brothers and sisters in Uganda, for example, are running pogroms against gay people?
Is it not Christians who should knock off the hate? Is it not Christian ministers and Popes who say 'gays are of Satan, we are at war'? Yes it is.
Do you ever tell your own to knock off the organized hate against others, globally?
Or is this all about you, as it always is with the 'faithful'. I me and mine, the holy trinity?
