ATHENS, Ga. (AP) The journalist most associated with the coverage of Edward Snowden's leak of phone and Internet surveillance by the National Security Agency will be this year's recipient of the University of Georgia's McGill Medal for Journalistic Courage.
Glenn Greenwald was a columnist for The Guardian and is now a founder of First Look Media's "The Intercept." He'll receive the award during a ceremony in the fall.
Last June, Greenwald was the first journalist to report that the NSA was collecting the telephone records of millions of U.S. customers of Verizon, one of America's largest telecom providers.
Greenwald was nominated for the UGA award by Dorothy Parvaz, an editor at Al Jazeera English and last year's award recipient.

You DO know that a contract to smear Greenwald was bid on after he began reporting on the Big Banks corruption that caused the fall of the world's economies?
I suppose if people support the Big Banks they are going to hate journalists who expose their corruption but a majority of the people here and elsewhere WANT those criminals prosecuted. Which is why it became urgent for the Big Banks to try to smear ANYONE who was courageous enough to expose them and their practices.
Greenwald more than deserves this award.

As for Greenwald, I've retired myself from commenting directly on that subject.
Just curious as to your meaning.

(55,745 posts)Here's what a real Lefty would know:
88-percent of DU prefers Glenn Greenwald over Cass Sunstein*.
A few details for the High Information Lefty running short on time:
Glenn Greenwald called George W Bush a war criminal and showed why he thinks that.
Then there's the opposite perspective:
Cass Sunstein worked to stop that kind of talk, as well as the investigation.
In a democracy, information matters. Really.
* The numbers have changed as people have "removed" their votes from when the survey was first posted. Now it's at 95-percent Greenwald over Sunstein.
PS: Thanks for grokking, Fawke Em. Odd how what are supposed to be voices for democracy so often side with the forces of oppression.

Maybe time reveals things that were hidden?

(62,325 posts)truth about the Big Banks et al.
We found that out for sure, after Anonymous exposed HB Gary's emails where it was discovered they were bidding on a contract to smear Greenwald. Very revealing to have that actually verified. Why were the bidding on that contract? Because Greenwald was writing about possible leaks on BOA corruption.
I always keep that in mind whenever I see smears against journalists like Greenwald.

(10,893 posts)as in ignoring Russia's abuses of human rights while trying to make something out of a (legal) surveillance program in the U.S. while other countries also do surveillance, then I agree--Mr. Greenwald is well-deserving of the Courage Award.

(62,325 posts)There's an old saying: 'Charity begins at home'. Torture, our torturers eg, are busy giving us advice on Foreign Affairs, rather than, if we cared one whit about Human Rights, sitting in jail cells for extended periods of time, life sentences would be fine with me.
I love how some people are so 'concerned' about human rights everywhere BUT right here.
If they actually were concerned about the subject, they would be supporting others who are, like Greenwald.

And yes, it does take courage to go against the constant messaging the American people are subjected through the bought and paid for Corporate Media.
Greenwald, knowing full well he has been a target of a smear campaign to be paid for by the big banks, fully deserved this award.

(62,325 posts)Greenwald might never have been heard from other than those who followed him throughout the Bush years when he told the truth about that criminal organization, had BOA not been looking to award a contract out on him, a small blogger at the time, for a SMEAR CAMPAIGN.
As happens often, the whole thing backfired on HB Gary, bidding on that contract for a smear campaign against Greenwald. But it's clear that SOMEONE got the contract. Although I have to say they are not doing a very good job. Greenwald climbs higher and higher in the world of Journalism all the time.
Just goes to show you, sometimes it doesn't pay to take out contracts on Journalists in order to try to smear them and thus discredit them to try to hide your criminal activities. Sometimes it's better not to give them that kind of intense attention.
I hope they're not paying too much of our tax dollars on the Greenwald smear campaign, it isn't working very well.

(62,325 posts)for an investigation into what went on regarding that contract bid having also found evidence of the possible involvement of the FBI, a tie that would be extremely illegal in this whole affair.
It is definitely a problem when Security Contractors are bidding on contracts for Smear Campaigns against mere bloggers, which is all Greenwald was at the time. A very popular Blogger on the Left, totally detested on the Right, but not known to most people outside of those two groups.
We'll see if the Dem Congressmembers manage to get the investigation they have asked for.
