for it. As for being torture, I can read a dictionary:

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/torture

the act of causing severe physical pain as a form of punishment or as a way to force someone to do or say something

Surely I don't need to point out to you that this is the proper definition of the word in context, since alternate definitions such as the next one:

something that causes mental or physical suffering : a very painful or unpleasant experience

can apply to something as innocuous as physical therapy. Whatever suffering hanging causes is incidental to its purpose of ending the perpetrator's life.

39. Hanging is not a surefire or quick death in all cases.
Mon Apr 14, 2014, 12:38 AM
Apr 2014

Hence the invention of the guillotine, when rope and high places were readily available at the time.

"The machine was successful as it was considered a humane form of execution, contrasting with the methods used in pre-revolutionary, Ancien Régime France. In France, before the guillotine, members of the nobility were beheaded with a sword or axe, which often took two or more blows to kill the condemned, while commoners were usually hanged, which could take minutes or longer."

That the Constitution allows for it does not mean it cannot be considered by society to be cruel or unusual. (Or simply unnecessary)

And history has provided us enough accounts of such voyeurs that it's easy to imagine a 2014 audience, all het up for another kill, another war, whatever, being totally bored by the "usualness" of the US death row show. Longing for the return of the guillotine, or maybe just a noose in the public square.

several years ago. It's not necessarily a democratic or republican idea. Governor Ryan actually went to prison on his own crimes. But, in many states like Illinois, the police are so corrupt that innocent people have been tortured to false confessions.

No deterrence effect. (At least, little to none demonstrated comparing DP/Non-DP societies.)

Which means, it's a vengeance thing. I can understand the desire, but it is not for me. Not for me, myself, and not for my government, which represents me. I can kill in self-defense, but once the person is incarcerated and separated from society, I cannot make a case for self-defense.

Why cut that short with an execution?

"celebrity" among prisoners. As for your comment about death row prisoners not committing suicide, you *do* know they are isolated and on 23 hour/day lock down, with one hour of supervised exercise daily, and get to shower once a week, right??

Even if they *don't* want to kill themselves, who cares? They didn't care that the people THEY murdered didn't want to die, did they? Even the ones in general population don't care, and many have killed again while serving a life sentence because they think "what are they gonna do? Lock me up?? I'm ALREADY locked up for life!! What's the difference??"

I know many innocent people have died, and even one innocent is one too many, so that's why I support a moratorium on executions up to a certain date, maybe ten years ago or so, since we have better technology and DNA testing now. If it's a clear cut case, with DNA evidence, video or eyewitness accounts and a confession, the death penalty should be carried out in a swift and sure manner. No more lingering around for 20 - 30 years, being housed, fed, educated and getting free medical and dental services on the taxpayers dime. Where's the free medical and dental for the hardworking taxpayer who can't afford insurance, or doesn't have it available through their jobs because the Corporations don't work them 40 hours/week, allowing them to bypass the laws for insurance on full time employees??

I won't lose sleep over a mass murderer, serial killer or baby raper/killer taking the needle or electric chair. My thoughts are more with the victims and their families, not molly-coddling murderers or worrying about their "feelings".

it is April, with the birth and death of Hitler, and Easter, for these people it is a witches brew.

And yes, when they get up there in years at times they decide to make a final statement (while they can) before they die.

And this is an irrational hatred. I highly recommend a history of antisemitism course. Same shit, different century truly. And Jews around the world have a passport and savings and one foot on the boat all the time for that reason.

The two victims from the community center weren't Jewish. I've already received an email about praying for all the victims and the congregation. No one has mentioned the victim from the nursing home yet.

The center had a busy day. I've read about the musical auditions, an audition for To Kill a Mockingbird and an umpire camp all going on at the community center today.
