11th annual Smithsonian Photo Contest Finalists

We're proud to announce the winners of our 11th Annual Photo Contest. Our photo editors selected the 60 finalists from over 50,000 photographs submitted by photographers from 132 different countries. Ten were selected from each of six categories: The Natural World, Travel, People, Americana, Altered Images and Mobile, a new category this year.

After looking at this year's finalists, take time to vote for the Readers' Choice winner below. Voting will be open until May 6, 2014 at 6:00 PM ET, and you can cast your vote once every 24 hours. We will announce the Readers' Choice, Grand Prize and six Category winners May 15, 2014.

Our 12th Annual Photo Contest will open May 15, 2014; the deadline for our 2nd Annual In Motion Video Contest is May 31, 2014.

11. The first pic is of Manarola, a city in the Cinque Terre in Italy (but it's altered)

8. How do you enlarge these things at that site?

I just see thumbnails and a vote button...

by clicking on them. confusing, but that's the only way I see.
