Got home last night and she was very lethargic and wouldn't eat...this morning not much better so I used an eyedropper and gave her water and some mushed up food and got her to the vet...he thought she might be actively dying, a failure to thrive situation. Tested her for aids/leukemia, both negative and got her on an IV...just called and she's doing a little better and he wants to keep her overnight and if she makes it, do more fluids tomorrow. Might be some serious GI issue that is causing her to shut down, but she did throw up and have diarrhea so maybe the intensive fluids would do the trick...she was fine yesterday morning then all of a sudden...it's very upsetting...she's only about 7 weeks old and is turning into a little sweetheart...she deserves a good life.

(19,569 posts)I hope the IV fluids help bring her back around. It could just be she's too young and having some digestive problems.
You're a good person for taking her and and caring for her.

(22,271 posts)My little Alaska (newest rescue) was doing great then, all of a sudden, she started vomiting and having terrible diarrhea. Got her to the vet, they did all the tests and everything was negative. We gave her anti-biotics and she got some kind of shot. She started getting better about a day later (at least no more vomiting). Poor little bugger was just COVERED in fleas but, in that she was so young, we couldn't treat her. We finally ended up de-fleaing her anyway. Turns out the fleas will distribute eggs which can get into the stomach and that's how they get worms. Somewhere in there she got an infection as well. She ended up being fine in about 3 days. Weak but she was no longer vomiting.
LTH, Ghostie, Henry, Erica, Xena, Dutchess, Loki and Alaska -- we're all sending good vibes for your baby.
Keep us informed.

(8,175 posts)I too took in a tiny rescue kitten (and her sister) that were dying in a pet store from dehydration and diarrhea. They weren't even old enough to be taken from the Mom yet, but they were. The pet store just gave them to me because they said they didn't have the money to treat them. I got antibiotics from the vet and they recovered very quickly. Is your vet not thinking she might have a bug that is causing the diarrhea, vomiting, and loss of appetite?
My girls both thrived after the antibiotics. I still have one of them...she's a little chunk now. She was just skin and bones when I got her.
Your little girl is just beautiful. I hope for both of you that she pulls through.

(5,079 posts)From all the kitties at my house. IV, fluids, and syringe feeding can pull through many baby kitties. And cyproheptadine (an appetite stimulant) now comes in compounded form. So you can just rub a little on the ears when petting her, instead of fighting to get a pill down her throat. Your vet's on top of things.
I'm looking forward to her 20-year-old portrait.
