They think someone a little less centrist will have the less appeal to the indepent's that will, at least in their opinion, swing the election.

But they will operate in accordance with their ideology, and so they attack Hillary because they see her as the most dangerous possible opponent.

As the President said, there is no there, there. My guess is they will continue to bring it up periodically and then when Hillary is President (maybe), they will try and impeach her for it.
