Ukraine is close to war, the German foreign minister, Frank-Walter Steinmeier, has warned in interviews published in four European newspapers on Tuesday.
Dozens are feared to have died in clashes outside Slavyansk on Monday as Ukrainian troops clashed with pro-Russia separatists.
"The bloody pictures from Odessa have shown us that we are just a few steps away from a military confrontation," Steinmeier told El País, Le Monde, La Repubblica and Gazeta Wyborcza. He added that the conflict had taken on an intensity "that a short time ago we would not have considered possible".

(42,239 posts)Rebels in Ukraines eastern town of Slavyansk have achieved a significant victory, shooting down a helicopter and killing four government troops in an ambush.
During about 90 minutes of fighting, the pro-Russian insurgents who control this town of 120,000 people dealt another blow to the anti-terrorist operation launched by Ukraines new rulers. They lost three of their own men; one civilian was also killed.
The ambush took place on the outskirts of Slavyansk, near the junction between the main roads leading to the regional capitals, Donetsk and Kharkiv. A man who lives nearby, who declined to be named, said the firing began at about 11.30am and continued until 1pm.
A lot of people were shot today: I saw the ambulances going past here, he added. It was the self-defence forces of the city fighting the governments troops.
The term self-defence forces is the accepted euphemism for the pro-Russian rebels who seized control of Slavyansk last month in the name of the Donetsk Peoples Republic.
