Elijah Cummings Unloads on GOP: ‘Using Deaths of Four Americans’ for Politics

During debate in the House over the Republican plan to establish a select committee to investigate the Benghazi attack, Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) opened up on how Republicans have used the attack for political purposes. In a fiery speech, Cummings attacked Rep. Darrell Issa (R-CA) and his party for using “the deaths of four Americans” for fundraising purposes.

Cummings began by savaging the GOP for issuing the “reckless accusation” that Sec. Hillary Clinton personally denied requests for more security at the Benghazi outpost. “When we located the cable, however, we discovered that the Republican report distorted the facts,” he said.

“This report was issued under the direction of the Speaker. It was posted on his website, and it was prepared only for members of the House Republican conference,” Cummings continued. “How is this a bipartisan search for the truth?”

Cummings added that Democratic members have been excluded from fact-finding missions to Libya and have been denied equal access to witnesses. “How is that bipartisan?” he asked again.

“Republicans have also been doing something worse,” Cummings added. “They have been using the deaths of these four Americans for political campaign fundraising. I call on the Speaker of the House to end that process right now.”

Cummings closed by saying the Congress needs to establish a committee that “seeks the facts before drawing conclusions, rather than the other way around.”

The truth is just difficult for Republicans, they don't speak truthfully and their listeners don't want the truth either. I think the recent statements by Cummings just may be the reason Issa is not heading up further investigations into Benghazi. More and more we should remind the Republicans of cuts made to security and if they truly want to get to the facts in this case the cut in the budget should be added to the discussion.
