Larry Wilmore to Replace Colberthttp://www.thedailybeast.com/cheats/2014/05/09/larry-wilmore-to-replace-colbert.html
"SNIP....................
The Daily Show's "Senior Black Correspondent" Larry Wilmore will replace Stephen Colbert after the Colbert Report host was picked to succeed David Letterman on CBS's Late Show. The new show will be called The Minority Report and will "provide an opportunity for underrepresented voices out there," Comedy Central president Michele Ganeless said. Wilmore appeared regularly on the Daily Show since 2006, and the idea for the new show apparently came from Jon Stewart. Brown has written for television, including shows like The Office and The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and appeared in the movie Dinner for Schmucks.

(11,785 posts)I can't recall a single report from him as "Senior Black Correspondent" that fell flat.

(12,132 posts)Larry Wilmore is win. He and John Hodgeman are my two favorites.

(1,142 posts)Too dry, not engaging enough, IMHO.
Wyatt Cenac would be excellent. Jason Jones or Sam Bee, possibly.
Actually Jessica Williams might be talented enough...

(6,278 posts)I get the concern that he can't "carry" a half-hour show, but so far we don't know what his format is going to be, what his supporting cast might look like (Jon Stewart arguably doesn't carry his own show for a half-hour, either), etc.
I remember the first few weeks of Colbert's show thinking, "What the heck is this?" It took a while for him to hit his stride, for the "heroes" to truly "get it." I don't expect Wilmore's show to look like pure genius out of the gate, either, but I do look forward to seeing where he takes it.

(6,278 posts)My RW sister-in-law, for instance, who told my wife she was surprised we watched Colbert... "He's conservative, you know..."
We felt we had to clue her in... I think that may have lost him a viewer!

(1,142 posts)When he's on, he's genuinely funny. And he's funny because he plays genuine irony so well.
Truth is that Jon Stewart is a very talented producer and selector of talent, and is in a very good position to know more than I do about the subject.
If you think of the amazing talent which has passed through TDS in Stewart's tenure, TDS is one of the great comedy colleges in America: Rob Riggle, Samantha Bee, Jason Jones, Wyatt Cenac, Al Madrigal, Aasif Mandvi, Hodgman, Schall, Carell, Rob Corddry Ed Helms, John Oliver, Mo Rocca...
This is a pretty good track record.

(6,278 posts)Though as you worried originally, it could prove a dud. Let's just hope we get a worthy successor program...
