When the cost of an employer-provided health insurance plan is compared to the cost of an Affordable Care Act plan bought on a state health insurance exchange, the ACA plan will be more affordable on average, a new analysis from PricewaterhouseCoopers Health Research Institute finds. In 2014, the premiums for health plans offered on new state exchanges under the Affordable Care Act (ACA) are comparable to and in some cases lower than those being offered by employers with similar levels of coverage, the analysts concluded. The data suggest the new exchanges are competitive with the current insurance market.
The analysis is based on employer-sponsored premiums of 156 million people in 2013. But what about all those news stories about people whose premiums had shot way up? Those were often people whose pre-ACA insurance did not meet even the most basic standards set forth by the law. Some of the sticker shock noted among enrollees in the new exchanges is due to more comprehensive insurance coverage in the exchange plans, the PwC analysis notes, citing research in Health Affairs. More than half the people in the individual market had coverage below the bronze level of 60%, the lowest level in the exchanges.

(1,115 posts)My portion of my healthcare is $100 / month for a family plan; the employer picks up the rest. We have a deductible of 500 per person, capped at 1000 and a maximum yearly out of pocket 2500 per person capped at 5000 total.
All of the ACA plans seem outrageously expensive to me.
You should kiss your employer the next time you see him. He is picking up a huge hunk of it.

(26,666 posts)All health insurance is outrageously expensive. That's how we do it in America. Your employer is a good person who cares about the workers and is picking up a huge chunk of that insurance tab.

(889 posts)Does the typical Employer Plan in the graph have roughly the same deductibles and co-pays as the comparable ACA plan? I could find no discussion of that in the article.
If the deductibles and co-pays are roughly the same, then the ACA has done its job, cost-wise. But if that Employer Plan has much lower deductibles and co-pays, then something is wrong.
Now, I'm guessing that the percentage calculations in the graph DO take into account things such as deductibles and co-pays, making the ACA the better deal.
Am I right?

(26,666 posts)he has excellent health insurance, which was good since he and my sister in law have multiple health problems. He retired at 64, so the company kept them covered until he qualified for Medicare. After that, he paid $1200/month for COBRA for his wife, but time was running out, COBRA is only good for 18 months. During open enrollment for the ACA, he saw his insurance agent and found a plan for $800/month with the same benefits. Before the hated Obamacare kicked in, they couldn't have gotten coverage for her at any price, but they still hate Obama because "he's not a Christian" and, of course, Benghazi!
We found a decent plan for $700/month for my husband, but subsidies brought it down to $230/month.
