One Burrito, Extra Cheese, Hold the Bullets

As “open carry” gun laws are implemented across the nation, some establishments are asking customers to leave their heat at home. Today the chain of Chipotle restaurants has requested that its customers refrain from brandishing firearms in their restaurants. The popular Mexican eatery is a favorite among families, with kid-friendly menus, toys, coloring pages, and reasonable prices. Naturally, little Cindy could be a tiny bit frightened when seated next to a NRA-enthusiast brandishing a loaded assault rifle. Gee . . . y’think?
The national Chipotle burrito chain is asking gun owners not to bring “intimidating” high-powered rifles into its restaurants, saying such firearms make other customers “uncomfortable” The Christian Science Monitor reports. Chipotle had previously said its policy was to abide by local laws so as not to force its employees to ask armed people to leave. The firm, with 1,600 restaurants across the US, changed course after gun rights activists posted photos on Facebook of Open Carry Texas activists lugging large rifles into a Chipotle restaurant in Texas. The issue of gun ownership or gun rights has become one of the most contentious debates in the country,” a message from Chipotle read. “Recently participants from an ‘open carry’ demonstration in Texas brought guns (including military-style assualt rifles) into one of our restaurants, causing many of our customers anxiety and discomfort.” Hence, company officials wrote, “we are respectfully asking that customers not bring guns into our restaurants, unless they are authorized law enforcement personnel.”
The spectacle prompted Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America, a pro-gun control group backed by former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg {and headed by Shannon Watts}, to circulate a “Burritos, Not Bullets” petition asking Chipotle to ban guns in its stores, citing concerns about public safety. The group has made similar requests of other restaurants.
It’s difficult to digest – so to speak – how any organization, be it “Open Carry Texas” or the NRA – could rationalize the need to carry AK-47?s into a family restaurant. This isn’t the Wild Wild West. Yet rationalize they do:
Open Carry Texas founder C.J. Grisham told Forbes that the armed trip to Chipotle was not a demonstration, but simply a meal following an event. “We’re peaceful, we’re looking for a place to eat, but we have guns,” he said.“We don’t go there just to carry guns into a restaurant,” he said.
Well why in the world would anybody think that? Just because a clump of your knockle-draggers lumbered in to a Dallas Chipotle waving guns the size of baseball bats, then used the opportunity to post a series of scary selfies. If the public display/photo opp wasn’t the objective, why not leave the WMD’s in the car before entering the restaurant? Did C. J. Grisham think he had to massacre the cow before they could enjoy their beefy burritos? When golfers meet for lunch after a game, they don’t lug in their clubs, and you don’t see a bunch of guitars and brass instruments stacked on the table at Applebees after band practice.
So why is it this particular “club” that feels the need to display their lethal toys wherever they go?
The backlash against Chipotle – and “Moms Demand Action” – has started with a bang – so to speak. This is from the brilliantly written and bautifully illustrated website, “The Truth About Guns:”
The standard tactic from Michael Bloomberg’s personally funded Gun Control Hysteria Formerly Known as Moms Demand Action is pretty well established by now. Step one: pick a common fast food restaurant that an upper middle class white family would regularly visit. Step two: find an instance of scary looking guns being in one of their locations. Step three: bully the fast food chain until they can claim some minor form of victory. Step four: claim that “gun bullies” are trying to unfairly force their opinion on the same restaurants that they just forced their will upon. Lather, rinse, repeat. Today’s target: Chipotle.
Am I the only one who is starting to notice the soccer mom trend for chains under attack, by the way? First Starbucks and now Chipotle? I realize that Shannon Watts only became motivated to “reduce gun violence” after a bunch of white New England children were murdered (apparently black children in Chicago don’t motivate Shannon).
My personal favorite in the quote above is step two – “find an instance of scary looking guns being in one of their locations.” Uhm, seems like the photos were posted everywhere by your own burly brethren, they were intended to be publicized – no? All over Twitter and Facebook and your site and other pro-gun sites alllll over the “Internets.” Isn’t this kind of fight, this publicity stunt, exactly what you wanted?
So which side claims victory? In our Armed Madhouse (h/t Greg Palast), we’re all losers.
