Ted Kennedy Jr. nominated for 12th District state Senate race
MADISON >> In front of more than 50 supporters in a packed American Legion hall Monday, Branford resident Ted Kennedy Jr. was officially nominated as the Democratic candidate in the race for the 12th District state Senate seat.
Kennedy, the son of the late U.S. Sen. Edward Kennedy, DMass., is seeking to succeed retiring state Sen. Edward Meyer, DGuilford, in his first bid for public office, and he told supporters in a 20-minute speech that he would work to build bridges in Hartford.
We need good people in government who are able to build bridges and work together, he said, citing his fathers ideals . . .
What really matters is what matters to the people in these towns, Kennedy said. At the end of the day, its not about me, its about the people in these towns.

(11,785 posts)I don't know whether Ted Kennedy, Jr. would make a good state senator or not, but the implicit assumption that he is somehow qualified/special because of his parentage is mystifying.

(85,998 posts). . . of the quote from Ted Kennedy's concession speech?
"For all those whose cares have been our concern, the work goes on, the cause endures, the hope still lives, and the dream shall never die . . ."
You can be a cynical as you please (I happen to think cynicism is a useless and meaningless expression), but I think this nomination of Ted Jr. is exactly what his father had in mind when he made that eloquent and farsighted remark.
winter is coming
(11,785 posts)intended "the hope still lives" to apply only or even primarily to his son. This isn't a Star Wars movie, where only a handful of people with the right genes can save the day.

(85,998 posts). . . the thread title suggests nothing of the sort.
Many, many folks out here have followed Ted Jr.'s life since his personal tragedy cast him into the public eye. I think that, unless you're prepared here to argue against his nomination, your complaints just come off as bitter and petty.

(11,785 posts)eloquent and farsighted remark," sounds very much like you think Ted was thinking about his son, period. Using that quote as your title instead of a more factual one implies that you're sentimentalizing Ted Jr.'s candidacy: the first, most important thing you had to say was the quote, not the fact.
In contrast, if you'd started with a title like, "Ted Kennedy Jr. running for state senator" and later referenced the quote, I wouldn't have given it a second thought.
I'm not arguing for or against his nomination. I'm criticizing the sort of non-thinking that begins with, "Ah, he's had a tragic life," and "Ah, his dad was a great Senator" and somehow arrives at "Ah, he'd made a great X." It's what he stands for and whether he can accomplish things that matters, not his personal history.

(85,998 posts). . . it's a perfectly reasonable assumption that Ted Kennedy would expect and take pride in his son following in his footsteps, taking up the cause of public service.
The rest of your blather is pure projection.

Makes you wonder, does it not!?
