CAITLIN MACNEAL MAY 21, 2014, 2:34 PM EDT
A Texas lawmaker on Tuesday said that President Obama believes he can combat climate change because he thinks he's God, according to Raw Story.
During a debate between candidates in the lieutenant governor race, an audience member asked state Sen. Dan Patrick (R), who will likely win the election, how much money he would spend to "cool the environment."
Patrick said he would spend "zero dollars" to combat climate change.
"I understand why Obama thinks he can change the weather because he thinks hes God," he said, as recorded by Raw Story. "He thinks he is the smartest person in the country. He thinks he knows better in Washington what we do in Texas. He thinks hes the one, through all of his executive orders, that Congress isnt even up to his level, so Im not surprised that he also thinks he can change the weather."

He changed his name to Dan Patrick because it is the name of a famous sports announcer, more vote friendly when they went to the polls. He is a fruitcake - God help Texas if he becomes our Lt. Gov. That is the most powerful seat in Texas politics.

I understand and have compassion for those people who have mental health issues. I hope anyone who needs or seeks treatment is able to get that treatment.
But I DO believe that this information is pertinent to those persons who might consider voting for or against him.

Distant Quasar
(142 posts)The '80s were a long time ago. The fate of the free world would hardly be resting on his shoulders as lieutenant governor. And maybe if we had more officeholders with direct experience of mental health crises, it would lead to more enlightened public policy (though possibly not in this case).
The fact that even in his ordinary non-depressed state, this guy is an anti-rational, anti-science loon - now, that's pertinent.
hamsterjill
(15,221 posts)THAT's why it's pertinent to me and to many. It's a documented part of his history, same as physical health is documented for most office holders.
The lieutenant governor's office in Texas has, in essence, more power than the governor. No, it's not the fate of the free world, but it is an important office that can have lasting ramifications on many subjects and issues.
Distant Quasar
(142 posts)shared by countless other right-wing officeholders and voters who spout similar nonsense on a daily basis. No mental illness required, just a lifetime's worth of indoctrination and groupthink.
It would be one thing if you had evidence of recent behavior that suggested he was unstable. But dredging up a single major depressive episode from 25+ years ago, without any context, and implying that this may make someone unfit to hold office today - sorry, I can't get on board with that.
I'm sure the bozo in question will be a terrible LG, but please keep in mind that Lincoln suffered from horrific episodes of depression, and he was very possibly our greatest president.
hamsterjill
(15,221 posts)I'm just saying that his mental stability is an issue for me...a TEXAS voter. If you think my wanting to know that makes me some horrible person, then so be it. I think it's my right to be informed.
Dan Patrick's continued behavior has me concerned about his mental competency. Have you watched the debate between Patrick and Julian Castro? His answers to questions posed during this debate is evidence enough for me to be concerned about his competency.
Distant Quasar
(142 posts)And I'm not asking you to overlook any aspect of Patrick's ongoing behavior, certainly none that raise questions about his capability to serve as LG. Maybe his mental stability per se really is a continued issue, or maybe he's just a jackass and a moron. You've seen him in action, I haven't.
All I am asking, please, is that you reconsider how you've framed this issue. You've foregrounded his medical history in a way that suggests someone's past struggles with clinical depression, in and of themselves, indicate he/she is incompetent and not to be trusted in a position of high responsibility. You simply don't have to approach things this way. It sounds like you already have more than enough reason to call this guy's fitness for the job into question.
hamsterjill
(15,221 posts)Which post clearly indicates that I have compassion for anyone facing mental health issues AND that I want said person(s) to have treatment necessary.
Whether right or wrong, all of our pasts reflect on our futures. While I want persons struggling with mental health issues to get help and treatment, I would question the fitness of anyone with those issues who would seek public office because the very essence of public office would include stress unimaginable that could not possibly be a positive thing for someone dealing with a mental health issue.
I know that there was a recent uproar on DU about someone being upset because posters were saying derogatory things about a relative who was schizophrenic. I was not a part of any of those threads. Again, I have compassion for persons with mental health issues, but NO I don't think that means just ignoring those issues and treating mentally ill persons like they don't have a problem. I don't want a blind person operating a vehicle on an expressway either - for obvious reasons of public safety, etc.
Persons who have health issues (physical or mental) are judged each and every day by society. If Patrick put himself in the public eye seeking an elected office, his past, present and future are fair game for anyone to judge to decide if he is the right person to represent them in office.
I believe you've made your point; and I've made mine. I wish you a peaceful day.

(322 posts)particularly considering the glacial pace in which this country is moving toward sustainable living, to "combat" climate change; so indeed he won't be spending to "combat." He will, however (if Texans are really stupid enough to elect him) be spending on the "effects" of climate change, from now and until humans can no longer inhabit the planet. Which, when looking at the issue from a state by state standpoint, will arrive much sooner in Texas than most places.

(9,118 posts)Dan Patrick may be a climate-change denier but a Dustbowl-style dust storm or two is likely to cause a lot of Republican-voting West Texas to turn thoughtful no matter what Patrick or east coast-based scoffers may say.
I drive through the heart of what was once Dust-bowl country at least once every summer. The locals may treat the soil of the area better than their great-grand parents did in the 1920's and 1930's, but I do see sand mounds and thinner ground cover than I did during wetter years. Dust storms are still possible; they just haven't happened yet.
One of these days some climate-change deniers are going to have some contrary evidence (almost literally) thrown in their faces.

(9,118 posts)As of this morning, Dan Patrick is the Texas Republican Party's candidate for Lieutenant Governor. As far as I'm concerned that just about clinches the Texas Republican Party's transformation into Flurry With The Fringe On The Top.
I suspect that Patrick's Democratic opponent, Leticia van de Putte, has just had her chances boosted against the Texas GOP. There are about as many Texas Hispanics as there are whites, and Patrick has used dog-whistle race-baiting for years.
Also, Patrick's defeated Republican opponent David Dewhurst's career may have tanked, but Dewhurst left behind a lot of oppositional research that he used during a vicious primary run-off. Patrick's Tea Party fans might have ignored it, but Patrick now faces an electorate of a different complexion.
