Former Pennsylvania senator and Republican presidential candidate Rick Santorum attended the March for Marriage in Washington D.C. today and gave an interview with TownHall in which he blamed the current state of the economy on the increasing national acceptance of gay marriage.
Marriage is not, Santorum said, solely about a romantic relationship between two people.
Its also about, he added, a unity of men and women, for the purposes of having and raising children, and giving the child their birthright, which is to be raised by their natural mother and natural father. When we have less of that in America then society struggles and suffers. Economically, it suffers; socially, it suffers; morally, it suffers and children are harmed.
The result of a decline in marriage and a redefinition of marriage, he said, is that you get less marriage. You get families that arent as strong, and as a result, society generally, the economy suffers.
He then defined every family as an economic unit, and the family breaks apart because we are saying that marriage is not significant
Its important for us to stand up for what is best for children, whats best for society, whats best for the economy, and make that case.

(31,886 posts)My mom retired from the hospitality industry last October to focus on her wedding planning side business. Every high price tag wedding through 2015 is a same sex marriage in NY. These couples are long term and solid and are spending $30 to $50 K each.
He's nuts.
Weddings, Funerals and Babies are all money makers.

(89 posts)For a party that is just so worried about big government, they sure do want the government to tell you how to live your life. The inconsistency and hypocrisy makes my head hurt. At least most democrats do not try to take one sided approach to government. There are some things the government is good for and there are some things that you do not want it involved with. Republicans just pretend all government is bad.....well except when it comes to abortion, the need for more federal troops at border, the MIC and on and on. Republican voters are some of the biggest "takers" of federal assistance yet they are mad at those "lazy" liberals. They have no self reflection.

(65,616 posts)Don't get me wrong, I've personally known some stupid fucking people, but is it really possible for someone to be so stupid as to blame the economy (which gosh seems to be getting better and better despite this assholes opinion) on a persons relationship with another person?
He has to be one of the stupidest men on the planet earth if he really believes that shit.
