Not just fuck, of course. Also the other stuff that would have gotten my mouth washed out with soap if I'd said them as a child.

(20,600 posts)everyone else, and "protect" them from seeing stuff, need to find a new hobby. People are adults, and can decide for themselves what they find objectionable, they don't need someone to tell them.
As for the "F" word, ok, I think it is used too much on Du, and loses its effect as a result. But here is the difference, I don't whine about it, or finger wag to others like a self-righteous "church lady" about it. Instead, I ignore it, and move on. If only everyone were so tolerant and liberal on here.

(20,453 posts)I see my post was alerted (easy guess who did it), and now I see how ridiculous this place can be.
Do I really care if people can't use the remote and change the channel if they don't like my occasional "rude" language? I'm not upset about things like that. They've banned better persons than myself here for pushing the envelop of truth.
No
What I seem to care more about is the manner in which people define themselves liberals or their ability to recognize the obscenities in this present world.

(112,771 posts)It's only since the jury system came in and disruptive people found out what a dandy weapon it could be against both the site and specific people on the site that they started going alert crazy, disrupting forums and getting good people threatened with bans.
I honestly don't give a flying fornication at a rolling doughnut what such people think. Instead of trying to transform this site into a kiddie friendly site, they might be a lot more comfortable on more mainstream discussion boards.
I know a lot more words than they do and much clinical language sounds a hell of a lot dirtier than the occasional "fuck" directed at politicians and policies that so richly deserve it.

(80,708 posts)in fact not caring at all implies a slightly higher level of caring than I think I actually hold on the matter.
If there is an absolute zero of not caring, I'm in some sort of Bose-Einstein condensate state of total lack of caring, approaching the theoretical limit whereupon I literally could not care less, not even as a figure of speech but a real physical impossibility.
Although recent discoveries in quantum physics have implied that absolute zero may not even be absolute zero at all, that somehow it is possible for things to be colder than containing absolutely no heat.
Likewise, I remain open to the possibility that despite giving absolutely 0.000000 shits about "bad words" on DU, it might be theoretically possible for me to enter, albeit temporarily, a state whereby I cared even less than that.

(32,017 posts)I rarely curse, but allowing vulgarity has always been one of DU's hallmarks, as far back as I can remember, and I think it's important that we keep it that way because I want the forum to be open to a very wide group of people, some of whom tolerate or use vulgar language, themselves, quite regularly.
I am sensitive to the latte-sipping liberal argument. I'd like American liberalism to go back to its roots as a working-person's operation. That means it must shed its o-so-academic, and o-so-superior, and o-so-snobby image. Much of that image may be well-deserved.
People who are starving and lack medical care don't give a shit what language we use. If Democrats want real people to vote for them, they need to be focused on bigger problems than the language people use.

(45,319 posts)Declarations of war, laws of oppression, sermons and dogmas which teach hate and discrimination are always without 'bad words' but they still manage to add up to evil intentions and they create, with their good words very bad outcomes for real human beings.
An example from this week would be the March For Marriage, filthy sentiments without a single 'bad word' because those bigots don't like 'bad language'. DU hardly spoke of that obscenity at all, almost as if a gathering intended to communicate hate toward a minority group was not worth mention.

(4,475 posts)I am very tired of the language police on DU. They travel in swarms and furiously push the alert button on any post that contains a term they personally find offensive, and eventually they find enough jury members who agree with them to be able to effectively censor to their liking.
I don't know when this dynamic started here (and I mean the perpetually outraged, group-swarming, must-conform-to-our-viewpoint-or-else stuff too), but it's all very unpleasant, and frankly, pointless. There are so many important things to worry about in this world, and all we seem to care about on DU anymore is exhaustively nannying one another's language. It makes us look stupid and it doesn't change anything. FUCK that.

(30,884 posts)but I care about the use of derogatory terms that carry the baggage of oppression.
Quick, what's that six letter word for Negro/black/African-American? Is that just a "fuckety-fuck" term? What about four letter words for Jews, like the one that rhymes with bike? Is that just fuckety-fuck too?
Yet somehow if it's a term for women with similar history and connotation, it's just the "purity police" around here who give a shit.

(16,749 posts)As that is the case, one should expect adult language at times. Added to that is the fact that many people are frustrated and yes, angry at things going on.
It isn't a Junior League garden party or an Embassy dinner, it's an internet discussion board.
All the people getting their undies bunched up over a few swear words are making people want to use more profanity, not less.

(14,733 posts)Do I care about general cursing? Not really. Although I'm surprised there isn't a general rule against it in titles, or text that appears on the main site page, to prevent the site being temporarily blocked by many workplaces that have filters up until such words scroll off the front page.
People cursing just to show they can? I remember doing that, back in grade school. Most people grow out of it. They may curse every day, but not simply because they think it annoys other people. That's petty and juvenile.
People using ethnic slurs, sexist slurs, homophobic slurs? Shouldn't be happening, and if they get alerted on, or even banned? Well, that's their own tough luck.

(23,272 posts)They then rev up the outrage machine with their friends. Won't listen to any explanation and simply "j'accuse!"
Racist, homophobic, misogynistic, sexist, bigoted or they simply don't like the word "fuck" - they throw the label out there and the actual discussion of a good topic devolves into a flame fest.
I guess my OP about meegbear's RP hide has set off a GD firestorm but that hide just epitomized the state of discussion on DU this past year and my frustration with the persistent derailment of good topics.

(3,279 posts)fucking select option #2, I had to fucking vote #3 since I support comedy gold whenever fucking I find it.
I find substitute "cuss" words such as "fracking", "flippin'", or "dang it" just about as useful as flameless candles, non-alcoholic wine, decaf coffee, and other such lame-ass shit. Don't get me started on e-cigs...
And, when I encounter these phony-ass puritans in the world who are so outraged over a fucking word, I ever-so-politely point out that I find "murder", "rape", "war", and "misogyny" to be words that represent far more reprehensible concepts than the thing described by the word "fuck". That usually shuts 'em up pretty fucking quick...fake-ass, puritanical, holier-than-thou fuckfaces that they are.
