A horrific mass shooting in Michigan leaves a toddler dead, two others wounded

A suspect is in custody in the Inkster shooting that left a 2-year-old girl dead, critically injured a 12-year-old girl and left a 34-year-old man with non-life-threatening injuries, according to the Michigan State Police, which is investigating the incident.

Police identifed the 2-year-old as Kamiya LaShawn Gross.

She was shot in the head before the shooter turned the gun on her father and the other girl, a relative, police said in a news release. Investigators remained at the scene more than 12 hours after the shooting at about 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Parkside Estates housing complex on the 30000 block of Carlysle Street.

According to an autopsy conducted Wednesday morning, the 2-year-old girl died from a gunshot wound to the head, said Mary Mazur, spokeswoman for the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s Office. She said the child has not yet been formally identified.
