It's harder to control an educated populous.

Our education system is soooooo broken it would hilarious it weren't so true.

I could easily get temp jobs paying $5.50 an hour, and often had semi-skilled jobs (like loading trucks) that paid $7-$10 an hour.

Gasoline was less than a dollar a gallon. I burned a lot of gasoline back then in frivolous pursuits, driving all over the western U.S.A. and Baja California.

In 1979 my share of the rent for the crappy student apartment I shared with some other guys was $80.

That is not my childrens' world.

Both the minimum wage and social security greatly trail actual inflation.

It is now a world where the rat-fuckers on wall street have "financialized" everything, repealed all the regulations that were an impediment to ever increasing inequality and we live in a world where 99% of us are scrambling to make ends meet all the time. The Boston Globe ran a story yesterday about studio apartments that are now allowed to be less than 450 sq ft, and as an aside let slip the fact that the one they were describing rents for more than 3000/month at 348 sq ft.
