http://www.businessinsider.com/conservatives-purposely-making-cars-spew-black-smoke-2014-7Pickup trucks customized to spew black smoke into the air are quickly becoming the newest weapon in the culture wars.
"Coal Rollers" are diesel trucks modified with chimneys and equipment that can force extra fuel into the engine causing dark black smoke to pour out of the chimney stacks. These modifications are not new, but as Slate's Dave Weigel pointed out on Thursday, "rolling coal" has begun to take on a political dimension with pickup drivers increasingly viewing their smokestacks as a form of protest against environmentalists and Obama administration emissions regulations.
Last month, Vocativ noted many coal rollers focus their fumes on "nature nuffies," or people who drive hybrids, and "rice burners," or Japanese-made cars.
"The feeling around here is that everyone who drives a small car is a liberal," a roller named Ryan told Vocativ. "I rolled coal on a Prius once just because they were tailing me."

(17,064 posts)These are diesel-engine trucks. Diesel smoke is mostly soot particulates, enviromentally not as bad as smoke from a gas engine.
Overall, I'd caution people to curb their "outrage". First of all, that is their intent, to piss people off. React accordingly, and it's Mission Accomplished. Just like peep with tatoos and piercings. Ignore it, and the "fad" will quickly go away. I say "fad", because we're probably not talking big numbers here... probably only a few hundred trucks, nationwide... we're not talking many thousands. The companies that produce and install the kits will soon find out they don't sell enough to be profitable. Just a guess, but such a kit and installation might be about $2500 or so? After spewing smoke a few times, it will get old. At least the morons didn't send the $2500 to a conservative political candidate, where the damage is long term. There's also questions about voided warranty, legality (esp. in Cali. ), and resale value.
So all in all, let the morons display their foolishness. Laugh at them. Take pictures, caption them, and post on social media. When the rednecks figure out they're not getting the reaction they're looking for, but are being laughed at, then this will be fairly short-lived.

We get so many "the republican's are on their death beds!" posts here and how I wish that were true.
But, what the last quarter century has shown is that this country's standard of living (debt driven or not) is so high, people have passed the point of seriously engaging in politics. They either tune out and don't engage or they become easy victims to the republicans NEVER ENDING stream of ways to engender a sense of victimization to people's indulgences, like in this situation.

The people MAKING the money, the Hannity's of the world know it, IMO, but find a sinister pleasure in it, while making big stacks of money along the way.
But, for decades now they have created this perverse brainwashing where they tell people who THEY ARE THE TRUE AMERICANS while creating an endless array of boogymen to vilify.
They USED to, and it is interesting that they don't even try to sing this song, but they USED to say "We are party of self responsibility."
But, they are so far gone now they don't even try to stake that high ground, they just have become relentlessly obsessed over OTHER PEOPLE'S responsibility, at least what THEY think other people should be responsible for.
Creating this mean spirited, reactionary mentality that has spilled over to our society at large.
So, you end up having these jackasses with big ass trucks who think THEY are the victims feeling justified in hating the "liberal" and even further one step from taking actual action against the liberal.
A place of business near where I live, has sign hanging up, "The only good liberal is a dead liberal."

The good news is that Conservatives always create a lot of collateral damage when they make war, so there will be a backlash. Just like there was a backlash against Iraq. The Iraqis didn't perpetrate 9/11. Just like there backlash against open carry. The traditionally right wing cops really love being identified with the "evil government," and put on their target list! People in at deep red Atlanta burbs love having people show up at little league games with AR 15s. There will be a backlash against this. In their mind all pretty girls are green enviro nuts! That will surely help their cause greatly. Yeah Right!

(17,064 posts)I imagine the smoke-spewing kits void the engine warranty. Most likely increases engine wear. Probably illegal in some locales (like California). And definately hurts resale value... the market for smoke-billowing trucks is really small, and cutting holes in the bed for the stacks just gives a place for rust to start.
Just a guess, but most of these trucks are likely show vehicles not daily drivers or work trucks. Spend several grand to belch smoke, get a few oohs and aahs from Budweiser-swilling goobers, and after that it gets boring pretty quickly.

(12,151 posts)There is a subgroup of hotrodders who tune big truck turbo diesels for maximum horsepower. A side-effect is gouts of thick black smoke out the exhausts. Those huge trucks can actually be made to be incredibly fast.
Now, this most likely does make them more polluting, for the same reason, which is dumping a lot of fuel into the motor. But it normally goes with a "chip" tune and sometimes other modifications.
But it's been around for years, and is hardly Obama-specific, or (at least originally) a deliberate thumb-in-the-eye to environmentalists.
Still kind of stupid, but it's definitely not new, and in most cases not simply a case of "sending a message" or what have you.
