US 'Profoundly Troubled' by American's Beating in Israeli Custody

Source: Agence France-Presse

Washington, United States: A "profoundly troubled" United States condemned reports Saturday that an American teenager detained in Israel was "severely beaten" while in police custody, amid heightened tensions with Palestinians.

The parents of Tariq Abu Khder, a 15-year-old cousin of a Palestinian youth murdered earlier this week, have told AFP that their son was arrested in Shuafat after being beaten by police on Thursday during his holiday stay in the area.

State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said the United States "strongly condemn(s) any excessive use of force," referring to the alleged beating.

Clashes have erupted in recent days, sparked by the abduction and murder of Tariq's cousin Mohammed Abu Khder, 16, as autopsy reports showed he was burned alive.

<Israeli official slams Kerry after condemnation of Arab teen’s death

US secretary of state strikes out against ‘despicable murder,’ but Jerusalem source says statement premature

An Israeli official castigated Kerry for the strongly worded statement, which came hours after the death of 16-year-old Muhammad Abu Khdeir, since it was issued before police had declared a motive for the crime.

“There are no words to convey adequately our condolences to the Palestinian people,” Secretary of State John Kerry said in the statement.

In his statement, Kerry condemned the killing in “the strongest possible terms.”

He said it was sickening to think a young boy could be “snatched off the streets and his life stolen from him and his family.”>

Detained U.S. teen ordered to house arrest by Israeli court

Jerusalem (CNN) -- An American teenager whose family says he was beaten by Israeli security forces will be kept under house arrest while an investigation into his case continues, his lawyer told CNN on Sunday.

Tariq Khdeir, 15, will pay bail and will be kept under house detention for nine days, lawyer Ziad Haidimi said after a court session for the teen in Jerusalem on Sunday.

It's unclear why the teen is being investigated or what possible charges he might face.

If the investigation ends without charges, he can travel back to the United States, Haidimi said.
