Fracking responsible for 22,900 percent increase in Oklahoma earthquakes since 2008

By Scott Kaufman
Sunday, July 6, 2014 11:19 EDT

A study published in July 4, 2014 issue of Science determined that the surge in earthquake activity in what had been tectonically calm Oklahoma is a direct result of hydrofracking and waste-water injection.

Before 2008, Oklahoma averaged one earthquake with a magnitude of 3.0 or greater every year. To date in 2014, the state has witnessed more than 230 such tectonic events.

One of the study’s co-authors, Cornell University’s Geoffrey Abers, told Nature that “it is really unprecedented to have this many earthquakes over a broad region like this.”

“Most big sequences of earthquakes that we see are either a main shock and a lot of aftershocks or it might be right at the middle of a volcano in a volcanic system or geothermal system,” he added, “so you might see little swarms but nothing really this distributed and this persistent.”

Fracking responsible for 22,900 percent increase in Oklahoma earthquakes since 2008 (Original Post) DonViejo Jul 2014 OP
(numerical aside) I think RS got the % increase wrong. 230 to date is + 230%, + 460% annualized. pinto Jul 2014 #1

K&R. Hundreds more earthquakes every year. In the middle of a reckless storm of greed. Overseas Jul 2014 #6
OK, OK, fracking is responsible for the uptick in earthquakes. tanyev Jul 2014 #7

22,900% is probably well within the margin of error. Orrex Jul 2014 #8

Still very exceptional, yet accuracy counts when making a case. Am I missing something in the numbers?

so 1=100%, 2 a year would be 200%, 3 a year is 300%. So, 230 would be 23000%

so 1 = no increase, 2 = 100% increase, and 230 would be 22,900% increase, as in the OP.

We live on a rock filled with water, gas, oil, other natural products, hidden in the rock. This rock is traveling at a good clip in the overall picture of the earth as a planet.

If we remove the natural resources, risks are involved with such action. What was once rock/water/rock, or, rock/oil/rock, etc, is now rock/air pocket/rock. Sometimes the two mix, unnaturally. IE: Flames out of your faucet. Gravity will win every time. It only stands to prove that something has to shift. Thus an earthquake as the result. It's simple science.

Does anyone want to live within 100 miles of this? I know I don't. When are we going to quit being idiots and stop this nonsense.

STOP THE FRIGGIN FRACKING!!!! Its just another way for us to destroy this great planet we live on.

And nobody gives a shit, because money talks.

But we still need several more years of studies to discover whether or not that is a bad thing.

BTW - Love the sarcasm

How many more communities will be destroyed before we realize how friggin stupid we are. If you want the natural resources, try spending the billions of profit on discovering something that is much better for the environment and the people.

Imagine this: You're in your 60's and want to retire in a nice peaceful part of the country. You find this place to retire and spend most of your savings doing so. 50 miles down the road, they start fracking. A year later, you have experienced many earthquakes. Your house starts to shift and cracks are found in the foundation. Now your water start to taste funny and eventually you can light a flame out of your faucet. At this point, the house is uninhabitable and worth nothing. No insurance company will cover your damages. What do you do, having lost most every dime you put into a roof over your head and get nothing in return? We certainly don't need more elderly people on the streets.

I'm no expert, but fracking sure doesn't seem to be the answer. But to these billionaire oil companies, they could care less what happens to Grandma and Grandpa. It's quite sad to see it happen and no one cares. Or very few.

The facts are the facts!!! Quit fracking!!!!

Evil of Hell released for cash. Let the fire and brimstone begin.

I'm just waiting for the explosions to start rocking on a regular basis.

But then I love science and metal sculptures... noise and danger.

And a fire that we can't squelch.

SMH!

Love, Peace and Shelter. Lmsp
