It is an 'alien' word from a Heinlein novel. Literally, it means to drink, but was used by that race to refer to understanding and knowledge and implies more than a surface understanding.

(70,090 posts)now i know the exact origin. and definition.
i will now say it is a kid word, also for those with young minds in old bodies.

(4,299 posts)The word was coined by Robert A. Heinlein for his 1961 science-fiction novel, Stranger in a Strange Land, where one character defines it as follows:
Grok means to understand so thoroughly that the observer becomes a part of the observedto merge, blend, intermarry, lose identity in group experience. It means almost everything that we mean by religion, philosophy, and scienceand it means as little to us (because of our Earthling assumptions) as color means to a blind man.
The Oxford English Dictionary defines to grok as "to understand intuitively or by empathy; to establish rapport with" and "to empathize or communicate sympathetically (with); also, to experience enjoyment".
See here for more.
it means as little to us (because of our Earthling assumptions) as color means to a blind man.
that pretty much sums up most of the people i use it on.
i started this little farm, and everything about it just unfolded for me.
i'm spend a lot of time sidewalk teaching and preaching, sometimes to people who have never seen a tomato plant. i sho do get that one.

(70,090 posts)illinois is still struggling from the legacy of republican governors after 8 years of dems (or 4 years of loony and 4 years of dems. we have a few bad apples, too.).
that legacy, unfortunately, includes a dem that should be gone but isnt- mike madigan.
those thugs were such perfect foils for him, and sometimes fools for him, that they made a midget into a giant. (ritchie daley, you too. i have many good things to say about the man, but he let WAY too much slide out of battle weariness.)
now pat quinn and rahm emanual get to make all the hard choices. and take the flak.

(19,288 posts)And they get elected to destroy it. They call it "Big" Government, to make it sound really hateful, and then proceed to try and drown it in the bathtub and rinse it down the drain. They want to spoil it for the people because there are about 400 mega rich families have way more than all of the rest of us put together and they don't feel like it is fair to share. Because they are racists, sexists,, classist, Fascist dirtbags. They hijacked the government for themselves and not the working class. They are killing the middle class. We might need to start calling ourselves a labor party rather than a liberal party. Maybe the working class would stop voting against their own interests, Republican.
All of the middle class should vote Democrats in, especially the upper middle class and values voters.

how the hell that is even legal, i will never know.
might be fun to dig into old dicky's agreements about that stuff, and make sure they were at least paper legal. they likely made the paper all up and up, then went about their merry ways. would be fun to hang him with it.

(55,981 posts)of him. Laura knows, maybe she will tell. Or Condi. I see it coming down like this:
"Georgie, there is something you need to know. Your mommy and daddy always liked Cheney best. He is the son they never had. But they knew that America would never vote for a face like his so they ran you, you and your stupid grin. Then they told you to have the Evil Dick help you find a VP. LOL. Jokes on you. He found himself, and he essentially became the president. While the whole world was laughing at you, he brought the American Empire to it's knees for a few gold coins. But Babs and Poppy were proud. Not of you or your nitwit brothers, but of Evil Dicky."
