(17,199 posts)I can't remember which songs, but I remember hearing from time to time he wanted to parody a song and was denied permission by the artist who wrote that particular song.

(15,429 posts)There was a parody of a character. A character that first appeared in a 1934 novel.
There have been legal parodies of Mickey Mouse and other Disney characters multiple times.
The reason Weird Al must gain permission is the parody is in the lyrics, but the melody is the same.
Why do you think Spaceballs was fine to do? Lucas never gave permission and Brooks never sought it.

(6,437 posts)He always asks if the performer would be cool with him parodying the song, and if they didn't like it he wouldn't do it. Most high profile case was Coolio really didn't want a parody of Gangsta Paradise, but his management miscommunicated with Al. As a result, Amish Paradise was made. Just because Coolio didn't want it didn't make it illegal.

(15,429 posts)Weird Al tends to use the melody exactly the same.
As I recall in the Coolio instance, the melody just wasn't going to work right so he also parodied the melody.

(13,986 posts)The best that can be done is to get a judge to rule it not to be a parody. Rarely works.
This happened to MAD magazine back in the day. They never lost such a case.

(1,590 posts)The Supreme Court case Campbell v. Acuff-Rose Music, (involving 2 Live Crew doing a parody of Roy Orbison's "Pretty Woman" held that parody is protected speech.
The reason Weird Al gets permission (as he has explained many times over the years) is simply to maintain good relationships with other musical artists.

(41,831 posts)and did a updated version of Mary Poppins? They would need someone to play the Dick Van Dyke part, but it might even be fun to have a sequel.
