drubbing he received over his comments on rape and women. When newspapers start to drop your column perhaps modulating in another area is a good way to save your bacon.

precede him. If you have a bunch of prior divisive opinions on the record (like Will does) it will be a surprise to hear something conciliatory or reasonable on an issue like this.
