Israel refused to evacuate them. The people of Sderot were basically left to their own devices... while Israeli mouthpieces crowed on and on about the suffering of the people in Sderot.

They were used as media props. Deaths in Sderot were used as opportunities, exploited to further justify hammering Gaza at the time. And after the rockets stopped, was the focus on Sderot levered into aid for what is one of the more impoverished portions of Israel? Nope, Sderot fell off the media map as soon as they could no longer be exploited as war justification.
