WTF! High school football star arraigned on 3 charges related to assault on girlfriend.

Jayru Campbell, the Cass Tech quarterback who was jailed after body slamming a school security guard on video, was arrested again Friday for another alleged assault, hours after his release. This time it was reportedly against his girlfriend.

Campbell, 17, was video-arraigned Saturday in the 34th District Court in Romulus on three charges related to an alleged assault on a 17-year-old female student at Cass Tech during school hours Friday. Campbell allegedly assaulted his girlfriend in front of other students over a dispute over a phone.

He was picked up by Detroit Public Schools police and taken to the Detroit Detention Center.

The girl did not require any medical attention after the alleged assault.

The charges are Robbery Not Armed, a felony punishable by up to 15 years in jail, Assault with Intent to Do Great Bodily Harm, a felony worth up to 10 years in jail or a $5,000 fine and misdemeanor Domestic Violence Assault and Battery charge that comes with up to 93 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.

His lawyer was out of the country so a not-guilty plea was listed on his behalf by Magistrate Lina Mack.

Evidently, he plays ball well:

Campbell led Cass Tech to consecutive Division 1 state titles in 2011 and 2012 and a semifinal spot last year before his arrest.

He just "doesn't play well with others."

I always capitalize my teams. I do the same for the ROCKETS, STARS,and RAINBOW WARRIORS. I hate baseball so I lowercase all team names for baseball. I used to put dashes in the R-E-D-S-K-I-N-S name as well, but that takes too long to type.

Odd that "your teams" are so eclectic geographically. Unusual is perhaps a better word. Most folks are utter homers, or they just jump on the biggest team bandwagon. Yankees fans in Des Moines, and Lakers fans in Baton Rouge. Silly.

a huge BRONCOS fan.

I was military so I lived a lot of places. Originally from Texas, worked at the Pentagon a number of years and now live in Arizona. But I won't root for an Arizona team because of this states politics so the BRONCOS are the next closest football team.

Campbell, who has verbally committed to Michigan State's 2015 recruiting class, punched an opposing player in the handshake line following Cass' 28-0 semifinal loss to Novi Detroit Catholic Central, the team Cass beat in the previous two championship games. ...

He clearly has trouble controlling his violent impulses when something annoys him.

1) he was still allowed on the football team after the assault on the security guard (and subsequent incarceration), and

2) he wasn't expelled from Cass per state law:

If a pupil enrolled in grade 6 or above commits a physical assault at school against a person employed by or engaged as a volunteer or contractor by the school board and the physical assault is reported to the school board, school district superintendent, or building principal by the victim or, if the victim is unable to report the assault, by another person on the victim's behalf, then the school board, or the designee of the school board as described in section 1311(1) on behalf of the school board, shall expel the pupil from the school district permanently, subject to possible reinstatement under subsection (5). A district superintendent or building principal who receives a report described in this subsection shall forward the report to the school board.

There was also this event that happened last year (he punched an opposing player in the handshake line) that got him suspended from the first game of this season:

The school, and the 'responsible' adults, helped create this mess. Football culture run amok.

on the field as soon as possible after the body slamming of the security guard. All the write ups talked about how Cass Tech will hold on until he was back at quarterback. No one asked the obvious question, "Are the other students safe around him after at least two violent incidents?" Well now we have a young woman traumatized by a battery with injuries to demonstrate that most important question was never asked.

DPS should be ashamed. Thank goodness home schooling is an option. If I lived in a district that was so cavalier about the safety of their students, that would be what I would do.

Of course he did not receive any special privileges to continue to attend Cass Tech......

Nice job documenting this. Thanks.
