CHICAGO (CBS) A northwest Indiana family has sued Hammond police, claiming officers used excessive force when they broke a car window and used a stun gun on Jamal Jones during a traffic stop last month.
CBS 2s Jeremy Ross reports Jones, his girlfriend Lisa Mahone, and Mahones two children were driving to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County on Sept. 25, after Mahone got a call from doctors telling her that her mother was in grave condition."
Hammond police pulled their car over because Mahone was not wearing her seatbelt, according to the lawsuit.
Meantime, Mahones 14-year-old son Joseph was sitting in the back seat with his younger sister, and began recording the encounter with police on his cell phone."

Armed gangs in blue, black, and camouflage are not their to protect and serve citizens.
If lawsuits affected the economics of the police unions this madness would stop.

(14,830 posts)when you encounter a cop? You can't. It's just reasonable always to behave as if any particular cop you run into is violent and dangerous and wants to hurt you.

(53,331 posts)All that needed to be done was give the driver a ticket for no seat belt and send them on their way to the hospital.
But no, they had to escalate the situation because of a need to emasculate the black guy in front of his woman/wife and kids. Something they wouldn't dare try that one-on-one without their guns as they would be afraid of getting their ass kicked.
Too many thug cowards and bullies out there hiding behind guns and a badges.
Screen all police academy applicants with psych evaluations before letting them on the police force.

This pig brutality is horrific, and I know this isn't the worst of it.
The war on drugs has created this shit. Drug arrests = funding. It's an abomination.

Hoyda said Jones refused repeated requests to exit the car, so the officers requested a squad car equipped with video recording equipment, and again asked Jones to get out of the vehicle.
A request is voluntary and refusal of such does not constitute suspicious activity. I'm sick of LEO use of this when they really mean demand, as in with authority to invoke consequences for not complying.
