The 'Snappening' - 100k/200k 'SnapChat' pics could possibly be leaked

Allegedly, it's not a hoax.

I imagine this will strike closer to home, and resonate more with the public than the celebrity
nudes leak, and drive home the concept that...

A) somethings are better keep private (as in taking nude pics of oneself and uploading them).

B) There is no such thing as privacy in a digital era.

Explicit images sent via Snapchat have reportedly been leaked from a third-party app in an event being dubbed the “Snappening”.

Some 200,000 users of the app, many of whom are teenagers, have allegedly had their photos gathered by the third party over a number of years before the pictures were posted on a website.

The nickname “Snappening” is a nod to last month’s “Fappening”, in which nude pictures were stolen from the iCloud accounts of celebrities including Jennifer Lawrence, Rihanna, Rita Ora and Kim Kardashian and posted online.

Snapchat allows users to share videos and images that disappear 10 seconds after being received, but it is possible to save the pictures by taking a screen grab in that time.

No images have been published and there is speculation that the leak could be a hoax but some reports said the leaked images were stored on the servers of a website called Snapsaved, where Snapchat users could save their screen grabs rather than keeping them on their device.

If you had never heard of the anonymous online forum called 4chan or thought about the threat of leaked photos before last month, you're probably caught up now. The celebrity nude photo leak dubbed the Fappening and a marketing stunt threatening to leak naked pictures of Emma Watson both emerged from 4chan. And earlier today, a social-media strategist named Kenny Withers started blogging about talk on 4chan of a Snapchat nude-photo leak. Is the Snappening upon us?

Business Insider reports that hackers have a 13GB cache of sensitive or explicit snaps culled from a third-party snap-saving service that they are planning to match with Snapchat usernames and release on October 12. Estimates put the number of photos at 100,000 to 200,000.

This isn't a breach of Snapchat's servers. It's a trove of photos from a service that a user would install in order to automatically save incoming snaps—without the sender realizing it. Snapchat said in a statement:

Would replace "The Cloud" with "someone Else's computer" when they think of uploading to "the cloud" they may be a little more circumspect in what they upload...
