I know that the wingers on the Disc pretty much hate black people. They go out of their way to portray us as the worst people imaginable. But when the come across a black person, like myself, who refuses to accede and engage in self-hatred and hatred of other black people, the wingers really lose their shit.

The funny thing is, that in spite of all the horrible things they say about black people in general, they can always cite some anecdotal black neighbor, co-worker, relative or associate that seems to agree with their bigoted bullshit.

he was the kind of guy that could charm the devil. My mother one of the biggest bigots I've ever known cried like a baby when he died. I think over the years, she had come to love him more than I did.

But they have this idea that I'm calling them names when I merely disagree with them

it becomes like an "it does not compute moment" you do not fit the stereotype that they have been taught. So then, they have to make shit up (like you are calling them names) to continue to justify their xenophobia in their minds. And there are those that cling to their bigotry as if it is a life preserver. I think the reason for that is that they are afraid they will be rejected by their own fellow bigots and ostracized by their circle of friends.

You know, when my mother found out that my husband and I were seeing each other years ago, she called me up. Her biggest concern in regards to our relationship was what other people would think.

More like, they are so locked in--drenched, you might say--in their own prejudices, assumptions, and rage that it cannot occur to them that anyone who does not share in their rigid world-view could not be satanic and secretly despise themselves for their liberal and humane views.

they set out to define me, they get really, really angry and hateful for not bowing to their will and accepting that I'm less of a human being than they believe themselves to be, and for not acknowledging their superiority over my "kind".

Schroeder: "Do you really think that is true, Charlie Brown"

"I know it is true"

"The whole world hates me".

In my experience, hatred can come from all directions. There are right wingers who hate me, and left wingers who hate me, and there are right wingers who don't hate me, and left wingers who don't hate me.

And yes, some do expect you to hate yourself and perhaps others "like" you, but that comes from both sides too. As I have quoted my distant cousin.

"She [Katrina] says that one legacy of slavery for white people is that we don't notice racial inequality because it's too painful. 'When you do notice, it's so upsetting that all you can do is hate yourself.'" "Inheriting the Trade" p. 124
