My Sister-in-Law posted on her face book page that her daughter and her friend where told by a

police officer that they could not ride their skateboard in their development. The girls had been in front of SIL's house.

My SIL is livid.

Has anyone heard of anything like that anywhere?

Local cities and counties pass all sorts of ordinances about skateboarding.

We're they on the sidewalk or street? In many places skateboarding on a public street is not legal. Legality on a sidewalk will vary a great deal from place to place.

A lot of subdivisions here in NC are private roads when built, but once done the developers petition the state or city to take over the roads. Once they do all laws apply.

in progressive locations spend money to build skate parks. No motorist wants to hit someone darting out in front of (or worse, behind) him/her on a skateboard in the road, and nobody wants to be on the sidewalk when skateboarders zoom by at 20 MPH, missing your ankles by millimeters. The way skateboards are used can often be very damaging to property, especially hand railings that elderly people often have to hold on to when climbing stairs.

the police were correct. Some communities do not allow roller blades, bicycles, or skateboards on sidewalks. That being said, I remember skareboarding in the street when I was a kid, but we mostly used a church parking lot or a tennis court. We never did the risky stuff that involved railings and we had no empty swimming pools or ramps.

basically to keep kids from taking apart roller skates (they adjusted to the length of our feet by loosening a bolt and nut) and screwing the halves to the bottom of a pine board.

These "skate boards" scared the shit out of adults. They didn't want them on their sidewalks or streets.

We of course loved them and broke that ordinance with impunity.

Lots of communities have bans on all kinds of skating. A call to city hall will give the answer.
