By William Thomas
There was a time not so long ago when Americans, regardless of their political stripes, rallied round their president. Once elected, the man who won the White House was no longer viewed as a republican or democrat, but the President of the United States. The oath of office was taken, the wagons were circled around the countrys borders and it was America versus the rest of the world with the president of all the people at the helm.
Suddenly President Barack Obama, with the potential to become an exceptional president has become the glaring exception to that unwritten, patriotic rule.
Four days before President Obamas inauguration, before he officially took charge of the American government, Rush Limbaugh boasted publicly that he hoped the president would fail. Of course, when the president fails the country flounders. Wishing harm upon your country in order to further your own narrow political views is selfish, sinister and a tad treasonous as well.

(20,577 posts)it is a disgrace and a national embarrassment. Why any Republican should win any election this year is beyond me. Voters who support this behavior are treasonous as well.

(65,616 posts)Maybe some of it is that they are watching the POTUS run the country and successfully, whereas all they can do is shut it down and try and break it. Has to be some professional jealousy there - watching the POTUS succeed while they continue to fail.

Despite the fact that the previous president took office under dubious circumstances, congress worked with him. Even those of us who disagreed with the war hoped (but doubted) it would go the way they said it would.

So the kid disrespects the commander in chief, which I believe is against the UCMJ, just because he agrees with grandpa?
I should have said, "Hey dude, does your Bible have 'Judge not, lest ye be judged' in it?
They enjoy being treasonous.

(4,462 posts)Our side is certainly not immune from showing "disrespect" to the president.
Ironically, claiming that any particular president actually deserves disrespect (e.g., Bush) actually misses the point of the OP.
In any event, I do not believe any president simply deserves respect, it is something that must be both earned and constantly maintained. My vote and respect should never be taken for granted.

(81,261 posts)And we ARE at war. We still have troops in foreign lands, on active duty, getting shot at.
I wish somebody on our side would start slamming the GOP for that. For disloyalty and treasonous activities, giving aid and comfort to the enemy. We need to start using the "T" word. TREASON. We need that out on the table. We need that out in public. We need that out there from some of the talking heads. We need that in the media, dropped in on talk radio, blogged, Facebooked, and Twittered. We need that to get out there - in the public discourse.
We need to start playing REAL hardball.

(25,406 posts)putting partisan differences aside and refraining from effectively committing treason by crtiticizing him while American troops were serving in foreign lands.
We simply did not think of him as a Republican, but as our President, at the helm of our country while we circled the wagons.
