Can't tell you the number of dogs and cats that I have worked with. They are usually very grateful and you can tell just by the way they act when they get the love and care they deserve.

And how wonderful to see them warm, safe and content, sometimes for the very first time in their lives.

Both of my kittehs - now, sadly, across the Rainbow Bridge - were senior cats I got from a local no-kill shelter. Max was scared of everything, poor little guy - and had lost all of one ear and half of the other to frostbite after his people abandoned him to the Minnesota winter when they moved. He became the sweetest, most lovey cat you could imagine after he figured out that he had a forever home with lots of love, warm places to sleep, and good food. He even got some cattitude back in time.

Butch was not so shy, but even a "tough guy" like him decided that this "permanent home" thing where he was spoiled rotten and given tuna regularly warranted some cuddling.

There is a special kind of good karma for folks who rescue homeless critters.

That was her adoption fee. She was a senior, already spayed, and she was confused as anything when we took her home. Kept jumping on and off the couch, didn't know what to do in a new house. It took her a while to let us pet her, but then she became the biggest cornball. She would even nudge her head under your hand and bounce it a couple times - "C'mon, pet me!"

We had her for ten years. Last year, she floated on up to Dog Heaven.

She used to love to doze on the couch. She would pull her paws up if you pet her tummy.

I miss her.

My mother's adopted husky would do the head bounce and nudge thing. It was so cute. She was just the sweetest dog. She was never greedy or stole food, she would even take treats from your hand so daintily. She watched over my mother and they loved each other so much.

It's so sad that they leave before us. But they have so much personality, like your happy cornball, they are definitely unforgettable.

could not pet her for 3 months, sneaked up to pet her while she was sleeping, to let her know it was ok, now she is like permanently attached to my heart. (she likes to put her head next to my heart and nuzzle). She loved the house, after being crated for 5 years, she got to run up and down 3 sets of stairs - I think I like that she is so comfortable now, that she demands things from me, Like _ it is past time for my cookie or I want to go outside, you cannot sit at your computer, we are going for a walk!!!

They have gone up a bit. I think we got a modest discount because Keisha was almost seven when we adopted her. For senior critters, many shelters will give a discount, to raise the likelihood of adoption.

and I don't think the people wanted to lose the care money. she could not run with the other dogs because she was identified as vicious (she was not - asshole owners probably just wanted her to be a smaller dog, spent no time training her) lived in a crate except being walked twice a day, - first I had to show I did not have children, then that there was no man in the household, then they wanted to know what kind of crate I had so I could contain her when I had visitors (I don't have a crate, dogs build a fort under the computer desk), that I had a fenced in yard ( I don't , I walk the dog. In public parks with children) That I would never take the dog in public. not. They really did not want me to take her, which only made me more determined to get her, I did not feel she had quality of life with these people.

and bringing her home was one of the smartest decisions I have ever made.

I also help out once a week at the rescue organization I adopted my dog from, walking the ones awaiting adoption and most of them are so grateful for a little attention and petting.

he knows his mama isn't feeling right (I just had a whole bunch of dental work done and I feel like I got kicked by a mule).
Rescues are just the best.

Some of the cats in various litters ran off or got killed.
Now we're down to two.

I have the most beautiful black and white kitty you've ever seen and he has stolen my heart. This is after being a dog person for decades. I never in a million years thought I would love a cat. He doesn't say much, but sleeps at the foot of the bed when it's cold. I'm glad he doesn't walk on my face or body, because I am allergic to hairy animals.
