"At some point, you have to evaluate whether the president's conduct aids or abets, encourages, or entices foreigners to unlawfully cross into the United States," Brooks said in an interview with Slate. "That has a five-year in-jail penalty associated with it."
But Brooks wasn't quite clear on exactly what grounds Obama could be impeached...

(116 posts)Reagan's amnesty order extended Simpson-Mazzoli to include some family members who had been omitted from the 1986 amnesty legislation. Without Reagan's order, those family members would have been subject to removal. Families could have been broken up.
Which amnesty law is Obama trying to implement that requires him to extend it to prevent families from being deported? It appears the administration is actually making families whole by inviting relatives of people who are already here. This strikes me as different from keeping families intact by waiving deportation of relatives who might otherwise have been unintentionally removed.
I don't want to believe the cynical argument that this is just being done to cultivate future votes for Democrats. So can someone please give me a sane reason why this is actually good for the US where the workforce participation rate is near historic lows?

(11,417 posts)Thank you for your cheerful troll job
Do you get paid to waste your time?
Just because you are so nice:
5,000,000 people in this country will be very happy tonight
American citizens will no longer have to live in fear that their parents will be deported.
That is something we should be happy about. Sorry you can't enjoy it too. You could if you let yourself. You are only making yourself miserable with hatred. You aren't hurting the immigrants at all. Give it up and come into the light.
I am lifelong Democrat. Try to escape the echo chamber for some air every now and then to understand that we are not all liberals. I am genuinely concerned with the direction liberals are taking this party, as witnessed by the fact that we were all but used to mop out toilets this past election.
This country has millions of taxpaying workers who are jobless, underemployed, or employed below their skill level. I was in no hurry to deport anyone, but then I never expected the President to start importing South (or Central) Americans. I am alarmed at what he is doing.
And you should be too. Have you tried to get into Canada lately? Every welfare state is rightfully concerned with who comes in. This is hardly a conservative position. It's just sovereignty.
Consider your own favorite nations, the ones you might consider the most progressive: which among them is opening its borders to millions or legitimizing millions of illegal immigrants at a time? For that matter, which of them has porous borders like ours? The answer is none of them, and for good reason.
So, yes, I think it's completely reasonable to ask how this benefits the country. And I don't think it's hateful or bigoted or even undemocratic to think that struggling blue-collar Americans could use a bigger slice of the pie for themselves instead of swelling the ranks of the lowest skilled among us who require the most assistance.
I appreciate that you view this as a good deed for illegals. I'm sure they think it is too. But the question was how is this good for America, and considering America's troubles right now you have not convinced me that it is.

(11,417 posts)board say they are a lifelong Dem. That statement is meaningless. It is what comes after that matters. If it is meant to get people to let their guard down it has just the opposite effect.
Next, liberals aren't taking the party anywhere, that is the problem expressed most on this board. The party is center right if anything. The tea party is so far to the right it makes center right Dems look liberal. Nixon was more liberal than today's Dem party.
If you believe what was posted on this board after the election we lost because we had a poor turnout and that was because there wasn't anything to vote for or that the Dem was little better than the repub. So it looks like if Dems want to win in 2016 with a large turnout they will have to be more liberal to give people something to vote for.
The reason we have so many people out of work is because the last administration wrecked the economy and current repubs in Congress block every attempt at a jobs bill.
No I don't go to Canada but the reason for the boarder security is mostly because of the Patriot act that was already written and just waiting for something like 9/11. My brother has a house in Mexico and he goes back and forth easily because of a pass he got from Homeland Security.
What other nations do is not our business what happens here is.
I was controller of the largest labor contractor in the San Joaquin Valley. Every week we had a payroll of 3,000 workers. No white American ever applied for those unskilled jobs in the 3 years I was there. The people affected by Obama's order have been here for over 5 years. They have been working all that time. Our unemployment rate is near 5.6%. Those folks are not displacing anyone. On the contrary those folks are very good at getting a living wage as they did in Santa Monica. Now everyone in the service industry there, not only Hispanics, is make a living wage.
They are no illegal people. Undocumented immigrants is the more respectful term.
You are suffering from a case of xenophobia. I hope you meet some of these people you talk about and get over it.

(116 posts)I don't tell you I'm a lifelong Democrat to get your guard down. I tell you that because you're talking down to me and accusing me of trolling and hate, and because you desperately need a reminder that I'm one of the good guys.
Also, my position may seem conservative to you, but it is completely reasoned and rooted in a concern for this country and the direction in which it is headed. And yes, liberals are taking it there. Liberals like you, who are still blaming the economy on Bush over six years later, or on the GOP House even though WE are the ones who lost it to them after only two years of Obama, during which time we burned a trillion dollars for which we have nothing to show, and during which time we set up a healthcare scheme that enriches insurance companies and has totally fucked up the low wage job market.
I suffer from neither xenophobia or hate. I am concerned about the burden of the welfare state. And that is the reason Canada and every other advanced nation regulates the traffic across their borders. Even highly progressive countries. So yes, I think it is messed up that our borders are virtually open.
I appreciate that you relied on Hispanics to fill your unskilled jobs, but I wonder if some deserving citizens might have benefitted from those jobs if the wages weren't so depressed by foreign laborers? There is no such thing as a job Americans won't do. If Americans have shown us anything, it's that they'll do anything for money if the wage is high enough. Rationalizing that you can only get minorities to do some jobs is like saying you're moving a factory overseas because you can't get workers here. Well, I think I'd like to know more about what you're paying for that work.
You're right, there are no illegal people. But there are people who are illegal aliens. And based on their prevalence here, I'm not sensing a lot of respect for us or our laws to make me want to start calling them whatever you find fashionable today just to make them feel better.
I'm sure some of our neighbors to the south are cesspools of poverty and corruption, and I can't blame anyone for wanting to leave. But it wouldn't be so bad if people felt a little more pressure to fix their broken countries and a little less incentive to come here and depress our wages and consume our services.

(11,417 posts)I think you are driven by fear. Fear of liberals and brown people and anything different from you.
Well the country is getting more diverse not less. And if we ever break the hold corporations and the 1% have on our government it will become more progressive.
We paid workers 8 10 and 12 dollars an hour depending on their harvesting skills. And we only hired people with proper documentation. No doubt some of the papers were forged but there was no way we could tell which were and which weren't.
What happened six years ago happened six years ago and we are still feeling the effects.
You are no Dem and I've heard you're talking points a hundred times. Everyone on your side repeats the very same talking points as if you never think for yourselves but just repeat what you hear.
Your enemy is not from below the boarder and is not liberal. Your enemies are the people who feed you that bull shit you repeat. You are being used to promote their agenda which in no way benefits you.
I know it is useless to have this discussion because I've had it before with numerous conservatives.
Maybe something will happen to give you a paradigm shift.
This could be a really great country for everyone who lives here if we ever were could work together on it. I am pretty sure you and I want the same things generally but unless we can stop this political decisiveness we will never get them.

(51,311 posts)by Government and laws. "Takers" vote "Democrat." "Low-information voters" vote "Democrat." Etc.
IOW: Republicans HATE and REFUSE TO help non-rich Americans, HATE unions, HATE urbanites, HATE minorities.
However, because people who ARE helped by government rightly associate that help with DEMOCRATS, that is how they vote.
So Republicans are catapulting the propaganda you refer to, because they know THEY will work mightily NOT to help ANY immigrants and therefore will not, and rightly so, win their votes.
The cynical part is that if Republicans could import wealthy 1%ers, they surely would.

(116 posts)There's nothing conservative about immigration policy that favors skilled workers and discriminates against the needy - every other advanced nation does that, including some where you would think the local conservative party is too far to the left for your tastes. Productive immigrants bring hands, needy ones bring mouths.
I would not argue for Republican welfare policies, but when it comes to immigration they're pretty much middle-of-the-road as civilized nations go. Every country would like to import one-percenters.
