Darren Wilson to ABC News: I Have a Clean Conscience

Darren Wilson says he's sorry but his conscience is clear
By Ray Sanchez, CNN
updated 4:40 PM EST, Tue November 25, 2014

(CNN) -- Ferguson Police Officer Darren Wilson told ABC's George Stephanopoulos that he was sorry for the loss of life when he shot unarmed teen Michael Brown last August but that his conscience is clear because he was simply doing his job.

The interview, conducted Tuesday and scheduled to air Tuesday night, is the first by Wilson, who had not been seen in public since the August 9 shooting.

The death of Brown sparked violent demonstrations in the days after the shooting and again on Monday night, when it was announced that a Missouri grand jury would not charge Wilson.

People like Darren Wilson shouldn't be allowed to carry guns.

None of this would have happened if Wilson hadn't had a gun.

If he can murder an unarmed black kid in cold blood, justify it by making the kid out to be a demon, and then turn around and declare his conscience to be clean, he has no conscience. Period.

Perhaps a new home on some island in the Bering Sea would be a good place for you. You will have no friends, might just as well be alone! I would suggest a South Sea island but that would be too comfortable. I hope you freeze your fanny off on some ice floe. Maybe the poor polar bears will keep you company.

This just makes me hurt. This just hurts. Dammit.

Saw a comment from Congresswoman Marcia Fudge about this - I thought what she said was extraordinarily profound:

WASHINGTON, D. C. -- Congressional Black Caucus Chair Marcia Fudge on Monday categorized a Missouri grand jury's decision not to criminally charge the police officer who fatally shot Michael Brown "a slap in the face" that underscores "an unwritten rule that Black lives hold no value."
"The Ferguson Grand Jury's decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown is a miscarriage of justice," said a statement from Fudge, a Warrensville Heights Democrat. "It is a slap in the face to Americans nationwide who continue to hope and believe that justice will prevail.
"This decision seems to underscore an unwritten rule that Black lives hold no value; that you may kill Black men in this country without consequences or repercussions. This is a frightening narrative for every parent and guardian of Black and brown children, and another setback for race relations in America.

"My heart goes out to Michael Brown's loved ones, and to the loved ones of all the Michael Browns we have buried in this country."

No shades of grey, no other nuanced choices at all? The fact that he had a whole range of non-lethal choices at hand from a baton or mace, not to mention the running police car he was sitting in, plus his professional training and many years of experience... when does any of that stuff come into play?

when he said he had no regrets and were he to relive the day, he would do everything the same again. You think by now with Zimmerman and so on that his legal team would coach him to say something like, "I wish I had drove off" or "I wish I hadn't shot him" to soften his public image. You know what I mean?

Let's say for a moment that Wilson was totally justified in his actions.

Even if that was the case you would think he'd display a little empathy/regret.

Hell, even soldiers on the battlefield who are facing people ACTUALLY shooting at them often don't take any joy in what they did.

Wilson just comes across as cold/matter of fact.

Conscience and opinions are not unlike awareness and illusion. One must work with the facts in hand and act within the manner they are inclined.

In the country I want to live in, Michael Brown would be studying for his finals today. Officer Wilson would be helping an arthritic auntie across the street. He would know the kids on his beat by name. His partner would be a man who had grown up in the neighborhood. They would be there to "serve and protect." Officer Wilson wouldn't be so damn afraid. In fact, he wouldn't need a gun. And neither would anyone else. Every man, woman and child deserves a healthy and safe community to live and work in.

Officer Wilson called Michael Brown a "demon." But there is more than one kind of demon, and Officer Wilson certainly has one within his heart whether he can admit it or not. It is not fair that the people of Ferguson couldn't count on their neighborhood cops to be human. Because Officer Wilson is a coward. He did not really risk his life for the community. He executed someone -- by his own admission -- because he was so frightened. He was a coward who had the power of law to apply deadly force in that situation. I don't think he has much to be proud of.
