I have several relatives who are retired LEO and they are still under 60 years old.

I took a penalty to retire before age 60 because my years of service (this time around) and age didn't total up to 80. If not for health issues, I planned on working at least another 4-6 years.

As someone who was forced to retire early almost seven years ago due to health problems, I have learned to live life to the fullest. It took me a few years to reconcile what had happened and to wind down my union interests, but it now has an outcome that has been the best that could happen to me.

Steve, THANK YOU for being the voice of labor here at DU, and don't let the bastards bring you down.

PS I'm still paying union dues, my body won't let me walk the talk, but the keyboard still talks the talk.

I figure health issues will retire me before I'm ready, too, so I'm following stories like yours closely.

Nothing yet, and I'm theoretically planning to retire at 85, but both my parents and all their siblings had cancer. All but one died before the age of 80, so while I'm not waiting around for the bad news, I know it's probably coming.
